Rankings are bullshit and all that, but to see Edinburgh Napier University also rank #1 modern university in the UK for #criminology feels like recognition of the incredible expertise and hard work of the best colleagues one could ever hope for. Rankings or not, very proud to be part of the team 🏆

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

"Kirstin Anderson opened by pulling no punches". I have zero trouble believing that! As always, here's @kir-anderson.bsky.social taking hard questions head on and leading exactly the kind of conversation we should be having about prisons: about social harms, academic pavidity, and lessons unlearned.

I wonder if this reflects the particular nature of criminal law, but my view is actually the opposite: Changing the law on the ground requires no lege action at all. If cops stop arresting for X, X is decriminalized. If cops want to stop you for X and X is not a crime, they’ll get you for Y.
