Tbf it’s only 2 out of 10+ films so maybe redemption for the festival is coming 🤞 (Although, it would also help if there was any diversity in the films 😬)

First film: family annihilation, guy dies quickly, wife and kid tormented for the rest of the film Second film: abusive husband abuses his wife and child from beyond the grave, they die painfully and he is sort of painted as maybe sympathetic ans wins? wtf 😬

All settled in for #grimmfest horror festival! While I know horror has a misogyny problem the first two films have just been an excuse to punish, humiliate, and be violent to women with not much else going on Who ok’d this schedule? At least the spider one was be ok right? Right?!

Not being able to consciously hear variations in accents you’re used to is so interesting. My Dad is Irish and my partners parents are from Liverpool. Me and my partner will swear blind their accents aren’t strong while the other will just laugh and say they have undeniably strong accents. Weird

This is such a cool paper! Use of the Manchester ‘happy’ vowel, (‘happee’ vs ‘happeh’) is an clearly striated by social class and unexpectlily stable over generations (which is weird for a vowel) Also, apparently, Mancunians can’t really consciously hear it.

What isn't surprising is that the husband was a well-liked rugby player with friends in the police. He divorced her a year after her "vanishing" and got given all the house and money and married his abuse victim. He even went back when new owners renovated "just to see what they were digging..."

One women was killed and replaced with no real investigation in the police system EVEN THOUGH she just vanished with no money/clothes etc, and all her friends/acquaintances say "No way she'd leave her kids" The other was groomed and abused by a teacher and no-one stopped that either. JFC

It's SO infuriating. I get it was the 80s, but the husband (and his teacher friends) were well known for grooming female students with no police (or work!) investigation. Two magistrates find evidence enough to arrest him for murder but... nothing. Like, do women even matter?

Jane @fossilyarns.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Data crunching + learning about a woman who went missing 30+yrs ago Immediately after she "left" her husband moved in his girlfriend who he started dating/abusing when she was 16 as her school teacher. EVERYONE independently says "he defo killed his wife" The police are like... I guess she ran off?

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples
