European political elites need to understand that if they say European security isn't possible without the US, they are actually saying that European security isn't possible. For many reasons, they don't want to accept that, but they urgently need to.

I lost count of the media interviews over the weekend where I asked them to please stop calling Russia’s performance an “election”, and stop defaulting to the language they use when describing a democratic event in a country where people have the option of changing their government if they want to.

Any agreements coming out of the Witkoff-Kushner Moscow visit will stick to the same formula as all the other US-Russia agreements on Ukraine during Trump's 2nd term: Russia gets Ukraine's land, Trump and his circle get richer; Ukraine gets to do what they're told.

Here's another example. Putin understands the world - other states; Russia's relation to them; Russia's identity and interests - through the lens of the Soviet period. It's a failure to imagine, and so create, anything new. It's necrophiliac geopolitics.

Comic. [Two people with tiny star floating above display on table.] PERSON 1 with ponytail: Now, your grandmother said this was a relic low-mass population III star, from the first generation of stars. Unfortunately, the high iron content shows that it formed much later, after several rounds of supernovas. I’m afraid it’s a population I star. PERSON 2: Aw, darn. As he's done over and over again since Jan 2025, Trump makes it clear that he doesn't see the US as an ally of Europe; doesn't feel bound by NATO commitments; doesn't view Russia as the US's problem in any way; and is fixated on imagined grievances. It's not going to change.

People need to understand that it is a good thing if Trump threatens to leave NATO and says the US will not fight for Europe. The truth was the alliance was dead the moment he became president again. The US under him would never fight to defend Europe from Russia. Pretending otherwise was dangerous.

The US president blithely rehearsing what Putin thinks of NATO, and Putin being sufficiently relaxed with/contemptuous of the US president to tell him, is pretty strong evidence that NATO is not currently functioning as a defensive alliance in any meaningful way.
