Getting close to something akin to the Stone Tape. Lyall Watson writes about ghosts and smell in his book 'Jacobson's organ', which I have read but I can't remember the details of now, so I'll need to dig it out.

I suppose the sceptical take is that their smells have become infused in the environment when they were alive and then in certain conditions they're released again. Smell can linger like that for a long time.

The spirit of the stairs told in tug at clothing, sudden rush of jasmine perfume or laughter of children. Told in tobacco fug, in an undeniable, audible wheezing. Told in whispered curse or snide tutting. Told in sudden shove. Staircase spirits are rarely less than bold. – #CJosiffe, 1982 #Ghosts

I expect FT's Alien Zoo column will be covering this, I was reading the latest issue earlier today and there was this piece on a newly split species of European rabbit. Vital research for biodiversity and conservation but irrelevant for cryptozoology.
Section of text about the European rabbit being split into two species after genetic analysis with a photo of a rabbit.

One of the few first hand ghost accounts I've been told was from my former landlord who felt a presence on the stairs in a former home and the strong smelt cigar smoke. She later found out a man who lived there before her and had passed away smoked cigars.

In 1880, St. Simons lighthouse keeper Frederick Osborne was gunned down by his assistant over an argument. Ever since, keepers reported heavy bootsteps climbing the 129 cast-iron steps at night - sometimes checking on the lens machinery. #SpookySunday #GhostStories #Georgia #Folklore
The St. Simons Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling were built in 1868-1872, replacing an earlier light station destroyed during the American Civil War.

The tapering brick tower still serves as an Active Aid to Navigation and houses the original third order Fresnel lens. Designed and manufactured in France, the lens casts its beam 23 miles out to sea.

The Dwelling was home to lighthouse keepers and their families until the light was automated in the mid-1950s. In1975, the Dwelling became a museum of coastal history, operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society.

Maps of the Lost @mapsofthelost.com · 10/10/2026
An oak tree revered as sacred stood for centuries in a field in Wiltshire. Ribbons were tied to its branches, and small offerings left around the base of its trunk. Children were conceived after dances around it when no pregnancy was thought possible, and disease healed by a brush of its leaves. Generations came, and generations went, and the oak tree stood in its field, listening to the whispers of the birds that told it all of that went on in the world.⁣
⁣
A few years ago, the oak tree burned to the ground. There was a stench of petrol in the ashes, and all who lived nearby knew what had happened, but not who had destroyed it.⁣
⁣
A week later, a local man who had been rumoured to speak to things of the night was found dead in his bed. The post-mortem showed that he had been choked by acorns: filling his mouth, stuffed deep down his throat, forced up his nose. There was talk of vengeful villagers, but this was not at all true.⁣
⁣
If you had been walking the village very early in the morning, you might have seen bird after bird after bird flying to his house, each carrying one acorn.⁣

Autumn comes to the cottages with carpets of apple rot that sour the air with vinegar tang. Comes in a dressing of the year not in green gowns, but wounded rags of brown. It comes as a fear of early darkness. A terror of hungry spirits that rush the path. – #DAKilory, 1982

Is there a coat of arms more suited to the Halloween season than this one?! This image comes from a German manuscript made up of a collection of coats of arms which relate mainly to the Holy Roman Empire. It was probably written in southwest Germany or Switzerland, around the early 16th century.
Full-page allegorical representation of the arms of Death. The arms are supported by a skeleton and a female figure, surmounted by a helm, hourglass and clock as crest, over which two arm bones hold a rock.

Day 11, Guising, Samhain marks the descent into the darkness of winter when spirits of our dead could move between this world and the next, But this also meant that vengeful spirits could also come through, to protect themselves, people would disguise themselves when venturing outside on Samhain.
