I made this Choose your own Adventure / RPG based on 400+ retellings of Little Red Riding Hood. It’s kind of fun, actually, a sort of playable critical apparatus! www.karsdorp.io/rrh-rpg/

I have a #reMarkable tablet, which I love, but syncing with #Zotero is alway a little awkward. There are some existing plugins, but none really satisfying. So, together with Claude I created a little plugin to make life a bit easier. Check it out here: github.com/fbkarsdorp/z...

Did one era really have more stories, songs, or tools than another, or was it just better recorded? When collections are built unevenly, diversity comparisons can measure the collectors instead of the cultures. Our new paper is about how to fix that.

One appendix result I really like is that standardizing to equal size, rarefaction, is often worse than not correcting at all… Even more so when collections are biased. Here too, coverage holds up surprisingly well.

The fix comes from paleontology: compare on shared completeness (which comes from Turing!) rather than sample size. Really impressive is that ~30 items already recovers the true ratio. Bias the collection yourself and see which method survives: www.karsdorp.io/posts/202606...

It's incredibly important to have a journal like Open Humanities Data. Had the pleasure working with @l-teixeiracosta.bsky.social to publish a dataset of 11k+ records from the first illustrated flora of the Netherlands (19th century) 👀 Look at that turnaround time: 1 month! doi.org/10.5334/johd...
Abstract of the paper and turnaround time from submission to publication. Example double page of the Flora Batava series including illustration and text sections. Letters indicate the different segments of the text: a) “species names”, b) “flowering time”, c) “classification”, d) “sexual characteristics”, e) “species traits”, f) “habitat”, g) “medicinal use”, h) “domestic use”.
