I bought a Penguin copy of Tristram Shandy in 1978 & by now it’s in sorry shape. There are plenty of good bookstores in NYC, so getting a replacement edition will be easy enough, but this nine volume offering on the Barnes & Noble website was a bit of a shocker.
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy was first published in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767. Barnes & Noble offers the volumes with a noir cover that looks more like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.

Can't recommend this book highly enough...
"Republic of Shade: New England and the American Elm" by Thomas J. Campanella, Yale University Press (2003). Cultural and architectural history. The rise of the American elm as a defining symbol of the American landscape and urban design. Winner of the 2005 Spiro Kostof Award from the Society of Architectural Historians. The American elm, elegant and highly adaptable, was an essential feature of America’s cultural landscape for more than a century, forming great verdant parasols above—and giving its name to—streets all across the nation. The elm became a defining element in the spatial design of America’s villages, towns, and cities, first in New England, and—with the westward transit of Yankee culture—eventually throughout the United States. This fascinating and generously illustrated book traces the elm’s transformation from a fast-growing weed into a regional and national icon, and shows how Elm Street satisfied America’s quest for a pastoral urbanism imagined since the time of Jefferson. https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300184471/republic-of-shade/

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

The Chambers Street J/Z station in lower Manhattan is getting a fix up, starting this year. Am almost sorry. Photos from 2018.
How on earth has the Chambers Street J/Z station in Lower Manhattan remained in such a state of decrepitude for so long? Its terrible condition does have a certain romantic grandeur. Its walls stained with decades of weeping water, its crumbling pillars, and the glimpses of its early glory — 1913 mosaics of the Brooklyn Bridge, set against a brilliant turquoise sky.
