Only Clints4Real singing My Way at the Times Square station could soothe the pain of my messed-up train ride home.
Subway singer Clint did a great job singing My Way. Behind him, a subway mural — The Return of Spring and The Onset of Winter, by Jack Beal. The glass & stone mural depicts a modern version of the myth of Persephone.

Privatisation in a nutshell: 1) Steal from us something we own. 2) Sell us back an inferior service 3) Charge us a higher price. The pattern is the same everywhere: royal mail, water, railways, the NHS, public services, council services…

Still making do with my old Penguin copy of Tristram Shandy, and am baffled by many of the tiny, illegible comments I wrote in its margins (!). But I love the book more than ever, on so many dizzying levels.
My copy of Tristram Shandy is now in two pieces. It’s got that classic yellowing of pages, and the paper is thin and frail.I’m halfway through Volume II, and Tristram recalls his Uncle Toby gently capturing and releasing a fly that buzzed around the dining room.
“… the lesson of good will then taught and imprinted by my uncle Toby, has never since been worn out of my mind.”

It’s a beautiful piece. I’m familiar with other work of Jefferies, including After London: Wild England, Bevis etc. and back in the 70s went through a serious Jefferies/Borrow phase, but knew nothing about this autobiography! Thank you!

I bought a Penguin copy of Tristram Shandy in 1978 & by now it’s in sorry shape. There are plenty of good bookstores in NYC, so getting a replacement edition will be easy enough, but this nine volume offering on the Barnes & Noble website was a bit of a shocker.
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy was first published in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767. Barnes & Noble offers the volumes with a noir cover that looks more like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.
