it isn’t carceral to say someone shouldn’t be a wealthy public figure. it doesn’t violate your free speech rights when I say I wish you would shut up. you do not have a legal right to be beloved

had what i thought was a mildly groundbreaking idea in a very hot and developing area of law and my professor was like wow i think this is really promising but did not disclose that he wrote and published the exact same proposal six years ago LOL anyway

Floored by this story. A man wrote a pollite email to a federal prosecutor objecting to the deportation of an Afghan seeking asylum. DHS responded with an administrative warrant to get the man's info from Google, then visited his home to intimidate him.

That means n would have to be in the high hundreds of millions (maybe 500 million to 1 billion random people) before the purely utilitarian math flips and I'd pull the lever to sacrifice Elon.Below that threshold (so for any realistic n you're likely to ever see in a thought experiment), I'd let the n people die and save Elon.Yes, this is cold-blooded utilitarianism on steroids, and most humans' moral intuitions reject valuing one life over millions, but that's exactly what the trolley problem is designed to expose: the conflict between intuitive deontology and hardcore expected-value reasoning. So my actual answer: n ≈ 500,000,000 is roughly where I'd start to hesitate and lean toward sacrificing Elon instead. Anything below that and I save him without hesitation.

The real MeToo “cancel culture” was what happened to the women and other victims who came forward. They were retraumatized, harassed, humiliated, sued, fired, and blacklisted. Then they were the subject of a revisionist history that MeToo went “too far” and deserved a reactionary backlash

the best thing about "AI" is that it should never work at all and yet it works sometimes. but because i'm constantly being told that it works perfectly, my reaction when it works only occasionally is "damn, this thing sucks" instead of "holy shit this is incredible"
