The Black and the Green (St. Clair Bourne, 1983) on @criterionchannl.bsky.social was a great followup to Union. It's about Black activists going from America to Belfast to express their solidarity with the Irish revolutionaries during the Troubles. A beautiful portrait of solidarity as a practice.

From this minister's op-ed: "People wanting to experience God are more likely to meet the Divine trying to shut down the Broadview, Illinois, ICE facility than we ever were in church...God does not live in our houses of worship, but...with those who are bearing the brunt of cruelty in this moment."

2/4. The entire practice of the Holocaust of the Jews involved zones of statelessness. It is easier to move people away from law than it is to remove law from people. Almost all of the killing took place in artificially created stateless zones.

This guy gets it
Don Moynihan, a professor at the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, agrees that the administration is trying to “change the facts on the ground” at the agencies it has targeted, by eliminating personnel and suspending grants. Once that’s done, even if the court says your actions were unlawful, restoring the status quo ante will be “a little bit like trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube.”

“Two big problems jump out” for the next president looking to restore the federal government, said Moynihan. The first is that the Trump administration is trying to shift the balance of the federal workforce away from career employees toward political appointees. If successful, the number of Trump loyalists in place for the next president could be not the usual 4,000 or so, but 54,000 or 104,000. “To what degree do you trust them?” asks Moynihan. “That is quite a different proposition than has been faced by any president in the past.”

The thing about “patriotic education” is that if you have to lie about America to love it then you probably don’t really love it. Ultimately their objection to the flawed universalism expressed in the declaration is the idea that the flaws were bad or that the universalism should be realized.

Well this is quite an opener
NINETY-TWO YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, on Monday morning, January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was
appointed the 15th chancellor of the Weimar Republic. In one of the most astonishing political transformations in the history of democracy, Hitler set about destroying a constitutional republic through constitutional means. What follows is a step-by-step account of how Hitler systematically disabled and then dismantled his country's democratic structures and processes in less than two months' time_ specifically, one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours, and 40 minutes. The minutes, as we will see, mattered.

@aoc.bsky.social e-mail going after TikTok & social platforms collaborating with Trump - with a shout out to @bsky.app
First of all, Donald Trump is not president right now.

He's a private citizen. He does not have access to presidential powers. He does not have the ability to do any of that.

Please understand that TikTok's decision to name Trump in the notification is a choice. They are signaling that they have agreed to privately collaborate with Donald Trump and the Trump administration.

For all of those concerns that people were saying that TikTok is gonna be used as a propaganda tool by the Chinese, understand they're using it as a propaganda tool for the right.

Now, I want you all to put all the pieces together because what this effectively means is that every mass social media platform in the United States has been taken over by the right wing, with the exception of Blue Sky (but Blue Sky is still very small, relatively).

Trump is the icing on a very shitty cake. And we have a lot of work to do to earn the trust of the majority of the world again, if we ever had it in the first place, which is debatable. We can start by having a citizenry that stands up to Trump in tangible ways.

Photograph of an embroidery hoop. A tangle of multi colored threads dangles from the bottom of the hoop, and stitched in grey thread is the following quote by Ursula Wolfe-Rocca: "It can be overwhelming to witness/experience/take in all the injustices of the moment. Ursula K. LeGuin: "American science fiction has assumed a permanent hierarchy of superiors and inferiors, with rich, ambitious, aggressive males at the top, then a great gap, and then at the bottom the poor, the uneducated, the faceless masses, and all the women."
If you deny any affinity with another person or kind of person, if you declare it to be wholly different from yourself—as men have done to women, and class has done to class, and nation has done to nation—you may hate it, or deify it; but in either case you have denied its spiritual equality, and its human reality. You have made it into a thing, to which the only possible relationship is a power relationship. And thus you have fatally impoverished your own reality.

You have, in fact, alienated yourself.

This tendency has been remarkably strong in American SF. The only social change presented by most SF has been towards authoritarianism, the domination of ignorant masses by a powerful elite—sometimes presented as a warning, but often quite complacently. Socialism is never considered as an alternative, and democracy is quite forgotten. Military virtues are taken as ethical ones. Wealth is assumed to be a righteous goal and a personal virtue. Competitive free-enterprise capitalism is the economic destiny of the entire Galaxy. In general, American SF has assumed a permanent hierarchy of superiors and inferiors, with rich, ambitious, aggressive males at the top, then a great gap, and then at the bottom the poor, the uneducated, the faceless masses, and all the women. The whole picture is, if I may say so, curiously "un-American." It is a perfect baboon patriarchy, with the Alpha Male on top, being respectfully groomed, from time to time, by his inferiors.
