Then you should know better yourself. Elon himself and his ilk like to talk up how their “autism“ makes them weird, as though that explains wanting to kill tens of thousands of people by starving them to death. It’s not an excuse and perpetuates the myth that we can‘t feel empathy.

As someone on the spectrum, please don’t perpetuate the idea that ASD explains their behavior. You can be autistic without being a fucking sociopath just fine, thank you.

Ah thank you! I’ll read that whole post. I recently switched my desktop PC to Fedora and have struggled a bit with Writer and Calc. I should invest in some re-learning.

…I may as well write my own blog post at this point but last thing, the ribbon reminds me a LOT of Adam Savage’s “first order retrievability” idea for workshops / toolboxes.

I will say I think the push to put the ribbon everywhere was pretty dumb. Like putting a ribbon in File Explorer seemed like such a waste. It has so many fewer commands!

Matt @flyinghyrax.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I used to wonder if people who first learned using the “menus and toolbars“ UI disliked the ribbon so much b/c it wrecked their muscle memory which is fair. I feel I experience this in reverse when using LibreOffice or Google Docs - I can’t find anything!

I learned how to use Office apps on the 2007 and 2010 versions and really like the ribbon. It is very discoverable and makes almost every command either 1-2 clicks or an “alt+letters” keyboard combo.

Very much this. Holding space for refusal of this tech is a key resistance strategy. That means advocating for that option in e.g. school policies (if we can't get a full ban) but also simply being visible in our own refusal, so that others see it as possible.

This is equivalent to when people notice a problem in these AI systems and then others check and claim it's fake. You just cannot know because the web is continually being scraped by these systems. It's "please, just one more if-statement, bro" and shifting sands. Any nonsense can be patched in.

Yeah, I don't recall Netflix installing 23 gas turbines in my city to stream some videos because their power needs exceed the entire grid and generation capacity of a mid-size city. "But inference--" It's less hungry than training but it's still costly. Try running it on your PC and hear it grind.

Seeing the same burial image on social media, others turned to X’s AI assistant Grok to check its veracity. Like Gemini, Grok will breezily assure you the photo is not from Iran at all – although it lands on a different date, disaster and location. The image is “from Rorotan Cemetery in Jakarta, Indonesia – a July 2021 stock photo of Covid mass burials. Not Minab,” it says.

In both cases, the AI answers sound sure: they don’t equivocate, and even provide “sources” for the original image, should you choose to check them. Follow the thread to examine those, however, and you’ll begin to hit dead ends: either the image doesn’t appear at all, or the link provided is to a news report that doesn’t exist. For all their impression of clarity and precision, the AIs are simply wrong.

The cemetery image, it turns out, is authentic. Researchers have cross referenced the photo of the site with satellite images that confirm its location, and it can be cross-referenced again with dozens more images taken of the same site from slightly different angles, and again with video footage – none of which experts say show signs of tampering or digital manipulation. The “factchecks” by Gemini and Grok are just one example of a tidal wave of AI-generated slop – hallucinated facts, nonsense analysis and faked images – that are engulfing coverage of the Iran war. Experts say it is wasting investigative time and risks atrocities being denied – as well as heralding alarming weaknesses as people increasingly rely on AI summaries for news and information.
