Yeah Carmen, remember when the festival you work for cracked down on its own invited guests and its staff for saying the very same thing and then you sent some pretty terrible and rude DMs to the people who joined a boycott against said festival? Very sad to learn of the passing of Marcel Ophuls, today, at ninety-seven; his achievement in the art of documentary is historic, both as moral reckoning and political activism: he created nonfiction forms for memory in a time and place of planned forgetting and enforced silence.

didn't get to post this in the heat of the moment – but here's Todd Haynes speaking about the influence of Douglas Sirk and R.W. Fassbinder at his Carrosse s'Or masterclass, definitely one of the highlights of this year's edition of the Quinzaine / Cannes at large (to me at least):

nothing really prematurely kills a film for me other than the seeing filmmakers calling their own work "haunting" in the synopsis. it's a litmus test: almost invariably, said films are overly pretentious and full of artifice.

Got around to seeing the Tiger Award winner of the year, FIUME O MORTE! What a deeply fun and imaginative film – and probably the best performative reenactment doc I've seen in recent years (and is becoming an increasingly visible genre). Has all the playfulness of a Varda film (big words, I know!).

Here is the full text of an open letter signed by 50+ film journalists and counting to @variety.com following their publication of an article blaming Rachel Zegler's pro-Palestine political activism for the box office results of a Disney film.
We, the undersigned, wish to express our strong condemnation of the Variety article “Inside Disney’s ‘Snow White’ Fiasco: Death Threats, Beefed-Up Security and a Social Media Guru for Rachel Zegler”.

As film journalists and steadfast supporters of the Palestinian cause, we are shocked by this attack on Rachel Zegler and her activism, masquerading as a piece of insider news, in what is considered our industry’s leading trade magazine. Blaming a box office failure on a young actor’s messages of solidarity with Palestine is particularly objectionable when Israel has drastically resumed its attacks on Gaza. This week, Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning No Other Land, was seriously injured in an attack by Israeli settlers and detained by Israeli forces. Also this week, our press colleagues Hossam Shabat and Mohammed Mansour were killed in Israeli airstrikes, taking the number of journalists killed to over 170. Our industry should have more urgent lines of enquiry than bullying an actor at this time.

Coming after the same publication’s hit-piece on the actor Melissa Barrera for similar reasons, this article adds to a dismaying suspicion that Variety is editorially partisan to Israel. Amnesty International has found that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza strip.

Free Palestine.

The kidnapping of Hamdan Ballal will unfortunately be used/instrumentalized by many people within film who have been absolutely mum on the genocide (if not outright complicit in propaganda) to "save face" and do some clicktivism and whitewashing. Don't fall for empty lip service.
