Screenshot: Out of ten men, one makes a sexual joke at a woman, two laugh, three fake a chuckle to fit in, and four stay silent.

None of them speak up. Later, nine of them still believe they're the "good guys." But from the woman's perspective, the laughter, the silence, the looking away, it all creates the same environment. So when women say "most men are the same." this is what they mean: not that every man harasses women, but that most men help protect the system that does.

I do not think we should have a death penalty. I don't think it is any kind of deterrent. I think it's barbaric. I think it makes us all worse people. All of us. And we just don't have to do this to ourselves. We could abolish it, and we should.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Sounds very real. The US healthcare system is not merely in disarray, it is actively and purposely stacked against the actual user of healthcare. Seriously. I have been to these conferences, I've been in these boardrooms. They actively scheme how to better deny and delay providing care.

Also reminder the best help for food pantries, or people struggling or any 'need' is cold hard cash. Always. Always always always. Food pantries can make that money stretch MUCH BETTER THAN YOU CAN, and it'll go to their most urgent needs. I mean, the other stuff is great too but cash is king

I don't really have a thesis here—it's just interesting to me how many things "everyone knows" you're supposed to do are not only not things "everyone knows," but are actually things other folks think "everyone knows" NOT to do

This! And like yes now that's changed enough that I look around when I get inside the door and/or ask if it's a shoes-off house, but growing up: it would have struck me as super rude to presume to remove my shoes in someone else's home

But take death out of the equation and you still get "my son wished me happy mother's day but his wife didn't, how could she be so thoughtless?" Meanwhile the DIL reminded the son to call and didn't call herself because why would she undermine a grown man to his own mother by doing it for him?

Annalee @flowerhorne.com · 29/09/2026
And with death specifically, this also runs up against people not knowing what to say/do and so they say/do nothing (Which is why standard cultural forms are helpful: a script takes the guesswork and anxiety out of expressing care in a difficult moment)

Yeah I was thinking about how it's a way that literature is in conversation with film and television, because that "tracking shot" method is a common tool of visual storytelling that doesn't always follow clean "scene boundaries" (itself a concept taken from theater)

Ours is a world where "of course you show up if the neighbor is hosting a wake even if you never met the deceased" people live right next to "no you don't barge in on someone's grief" people and where both would feel certain that theirs was the respectful and appropriate choice

But what's noteworthy to me is how easy it is for us to assume the norms of our microcultures are universal

[Thing] varies but is often a standard around acknowledging deaths/funerals. And hey when people are grieving it's understandable that they're looking for somewhere to put their hurt and the person who didn't attend the funeral/send flowers/whatever is generally still alive to be mad at

Today in "I read too many advice columns:" I've noticed a genre of letter that is basically "everyone knows it is common decency to do [thing] and I want to cut off people who did not do it" in cases where there is not actually a cultural consensus that [thing] is an obligation or even a good idea

Any cognition you perceive in "AI" is your own. That's it. You built your concept of its intelligence, the same way you understand fictional characters as people. The same way you can see an octopus in a towel hook. They are using your mind to sell their product. The human is you.

It has to be clear but also unassuming: the reader usually needs to know whose thoughts they're hearing or things get confusing, but if the handoff draws attention to itself, it pulls it from the flow of the scene and the next story beats

Annalee @flowerhorne.com · 29/09/2026
As far as I can tell there's a few things in the mix: -the author has to know who has the most interesting perspective on each portion of the scene -the reader has to care enough what the be viewpoint character thinks to go along for the ride -there's some artistry in the handoff itself as well

This is NOT the same as omniscient, and it's distinct from head-hopping in that the problem with head-hopping is it doesn't work and this does.

I might have mentioned this already wrt @sherwood.bsky.social's Sartorias-Deles books. I'm now in the middle of The Galaxy, and the Ground Within where Becky Chambers is doing a handoff in the middle of a greeting between two characters I just think it's neat

I've read a few novels lately that are employing what I think of as "viewpoint chaos" to good effect and I keep wanting to stop and study it It's a multi-pov approach where pov can switch mid-scene instead of just at chapter/scene breaks. The moments of handoff are what fascinates me

Formal affordances are the elements that pull a player toward certain actions, they “cry out” for the player to take those actions. Material affordances are the actions a system actually allows the player to take. Agency occurs when the two are in balance. (Mateas 2001)
