I'm not even joking; literally not even a decade ago, Halloween still waited till the last week or maybe two weeks of October. It's basically a shopping Holiday in the vein of Valentine’s Day and brings in more money than any other holiday save Christmas. It's a capitalist invention.

I've run into this same issue, and I found there is a way to keep a local copy. In System Settings, click your name, then iCloud, then Drive and turn off Optimize Mac Storage. You can also right-click individual files and tell it to keep downloaded.

And while that is part of the story, historical context is helpful. This was written around or during the Babylonian exile. One of the many things that the ancient Israelites believed caused the exile was child sacrifice to Moloch. This can be read as a story against child sacrifice.

This is why I think the other aspects of understanding come into play. My go to example is the binding of Isaac. Lots of people find the story grotesque that god would ask Abraham for his firstborn and then at the last minute be all “welp, your loyalty has been proven.”

So how you define what you mean by literal is going to greatly affect your approach to the Bible. If you define it as everything said here literally happened as described, then I think you are going to quickly back yourself against a theological wall.

I think it greatly depends on how you define “literal. Particularly when you consider the Bible is a collection of myths, tribal history, prophecy, poetry, theological treatises, etc., it's also important to separate the idea of "Truth" from "this literally happened.”
