🐦🧬 What does it take to complete the genome of a songbird? The Vertebrate Genomes Project has produced the first complete, fully phased reference genome of the zebra finch (𝘛𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘺𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘨𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢). Getting there took more than simply generating more sequence. #T2T #VGP #Genomics #GenomeAssembly
A male zebra finch with a bright red-orange beak, orange cheek patch, striped chest, and spotted brown wings. Text asks, “What does it take to complete the genome of a songbird?” and explains that the Vertebrate Genomes Project produced the first truly complete, fully diploid, fully phased reference genome of the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).A male zebra finch standing on rocky ground. Text explains that bird genomes are relatively small, but some of their tiniest chromosomes are difficult to sequence. The complete zebra finch genome revealed 7 macrochromosomes, 21 microchromosomes, and 11 tiny dot chromosomes.

New preprint: 338 coleopteran genomes reveal exceptional rearrangement variation compared to other insect orders. Big congrats to @arf-mln.bsky.social, for getting this giant piece together. Big collaboration of @joanameier.bsky.social's and my groups. 🧵👇 doi.org/10.64898/202...
Phylogeny of 338 species with tips painted by the chromosomal ancestry of their contemporary genomes (well separated colours indicate only few changes, while blending indicates rearrangements). Colouring of the branches is by the number of rearrangements. The ring between paints and phylogeny indicates wether the chromosomal rearrangement was fusion dominated (brown) or fission dominated (teal) process.

Evidence of two centromeres in the germline-restricted chromosome (GRC): insights from zebra finch lampbrush chromosomes
The germline-restricted chromosome (GRC) of the zebra finch Taeniopygia guttata represents a well-established model of programmed DNA elimination in vertebrates. Although the DNA composition of the GR...

Valencia-Cárdenas et al. assembled nuclear and mitochondrial genomes of the amphibious fish Istiblennius linneatus, obtaining 24 pseudochromosomes and a highly complete nuclear assembly. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/gbe/... 📷 David Burdick #genome #evolution
GBE | The Nuclear and Mitochondrial Genomes of the Lined Rockskipper, Istiblennius lineatus (Teleostei: Blenniidae)

The lined rockskipper (Istiblennius lineatus, family Blenniidae) is an amphibious fish distributed throughout Indo-Pacific intertidal coastal shores. Valencia-Cardenas and colleagues present its nuclear and mitochondrial genomes as a resource to better understand its ecology and evolutionary history. Pictured an individual from Guam.
