I still don't understand how anyone gets past 2014 Nigel Farage openly defending Vladimir Putin and telling Prince Charles that he's wrong to compare the Russian President to Hitler just because he annexed Crimea. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/05/21/u...
HUFFPOST

"Prince Charles has made those comments. I know some people feel that way about Putin. I think there's a difference and the difference, I think, is that right from the very start Hitler was expansionist and we haven't seen much evidence of that until now from Putin and arguably what's happened in the Ukraine is because he's been poked with a stick by the rest of the world."

Farage was widely criticised in March after he said the Russian president was the world leader he most admired. He told GQ Magazine that he was a fan of Putin as "an operator" if not as a human being. "The way he played the whole Syria thing. Brilliant. Not that I approve of him politically," he said.

On Wednesday the Daily Mail reported that Prince Charles compared Putin to the Nazi leader while paying tribute to Second World War veterans and their families in Canada.

His remark came during a tour of the Museum of Immigration in Halifax, Nova Contin

Nigel Farage in the EU parliament blaming the UK, EU and NATO for Putin annexing Ukraine in 2014. His UKIP / Brexit Party / Reform UK deputy Nathan Gill is in prison for repeating Russian government talking points. Why does this tool get a pass for doing it for free?

Austerity was a major factor in creating a system that was seen as not working, and where for many it was a vote against the then current system rather than for whatever Brexit would become. Those voters can see Brexit for the failure that is and will always be.

You can hold all these views: That the Russians almost certainly interfered. That we need to know the extent of that interference to protect against it happening in future. And that no matter how effective it was, millions still felt angry enough with the status quo to risk change.

It doesn't matter what your view of Brexit is. Even if the interference proved decisive, it wouldn't take away from the fact that millions of Brits felt discontented enough to demand change. But to close your ears to it is to prioritise your ideology over your sense of national responsibility.

Just so you understand the scale of betrayal: first, our "partners" didn't warn Ukraine about the incoming ballistic missiles, so the air raid alert wasn't activated before impact, robbing people of their chance to survive. Then, Starlink was restricted to stop working at speeds above 100 mph.

This is equivalent of Trump rejecting FBI assessment of Russian interference in US elections. It’s not “Burnham’s” claim, it’s our own intelligence agencies’ assessment. Denying it for political advantage is both shameful AND short sighted, as it does nothing to enhance her credibility.

To be fair, IPSO clause 9 does prevent friends and relatives from being named unless it is genuinely relevant. I'm not sure where that stands when the defendant is in a relationship with a former minister, current Lord, and editor of the Spectator? It feels relevant to why she is of interest🤷‍♀️
Clause 9 outlines guidelines on reporting crime, focusing on the anonymity of relatives and vulnerable individuals.

FTR shattering letter about how the Conservative Government ignored the entirely credible threat from Putin in favour of feeding The City (& Tory Party) roubles👇 March 23 2022 Carl Scott, Air Commodore (Retired), UK defence attaché in Moscow for five years, 2011-2016 www.ft.com/content/857d...

Letter: A defence attaché despairs at inevitability of conflict

From Carl Scott, Air Commodore (Retired), Oakham, Rutland, UK

[Photo of Sherlock Holmes and Watson monument at the British Embassy in Moscow]

MARCH 23 2022The recent article by Maria Stepanova "The war of Putin's imagination" (Life & Arts, FT Weekend, March 19) was exemplary. However, one jarring note was the unfounded notion that no one expected this aggression from the Kremlin.

I served as the UK's defence attaché in Moscow for five years, 2011-2016, during which time this long, dark march to war was obvious, the path to conflict lit by the many pronouncements emanating from the dark red walls of Vladimir Putin's palace.

We reported the inevitability of conflict in detail, regularly and with the despair of Cassandra. One of the earliest reports opened with a line from Sherlock Holmes, whose statue stands outside the British Embassy wall: "There's an east wind coming all the same, such a wind as never blew on England yet. It will be cold and bitter, Watson, and a good many of us may wither before its blast."The evidence of Putin's chosen path was never concealed. His many declarations were meant to be heard and understood: the colossal rearmament programme, the demand for more complex, more lethal weaponry; the militarisation of society; the distortion and seizure of the popular narrative; domination of education, the media and the courts to exclude contrasting views and, ultimately, the alienation and destruction of those among the Russian people who understood the folly of his declared ambition.

The list is remorseless, the consequences could not be ignored. But they were.

It was not until I returned to the UK on the eve of our withdrawal from the EU, a manoeuvre which greatly emboldened those in Moscow, that I understood how our society had changed in the years I was serving overseas. All was subjugated to the City, all served the interests of our lucrative status as a safe haven for corrupt, and corrupting, wealth. The values we were demanding of other nations had long since faded from our own actions.

I despair at the decisions Putin has taken, but even more at the prospect of finding credible leadership at home in the UK among those who have compromised so long with his regime and the wealth it offered.
