"My earliest memory of the joy of flight was formed in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. My mom and I, on the top deck of a rented beach house, with balsa wood gliders. Not even a whole dollar for one. They came in all kinds. Ones with wings designed to do loops, ones with plastic and wire propellers that spun up on rubber bands, ones that went farther than you’d believe you could throw. She'd hold on to the strap of my Oshkosh with one hand and her Coors Light in the other, and perched as high as I could get, I'd send my little planes flying. Watching them crest over the other houses between us and the beach, descending somewhere beyond the brief, already eroding dunes of the Outer Banks. We'd send my stepfather off to retrieve them. And then we'd do it again until the sun started to set.

The earliest memory I have of the joy of aerial combat is taking one of those same balsa wood gliders and throwing it as hard as I could into the side of a classmate's stupid head. This is the corruption of the purity of flight."

to briefly build on this: my approach to games that have any type of AI in them is to go safety-off in terms of critique. what were previously human foibles that i would forgive, you have ceded to the machine. i will not hold back from calling your video game ugly or stupid if you use AI.

SCOOP: double fine is unionizing

ouble Fine, the Microsoft-owned studio behind Psychonauts and, more recently, experimental fare like Keeper and Kiln, is set to unionize, per a petition filed to the National Labor Relations Board.

The petition, filed May 7, says that like other Microsoft games division studios that have unionized to date, Double Fine workers are making their unionization push in conjunction with Communications Workers of America (CWA). The union will include all “regular part-time and full-time employees”—a total of 42.

“On May 7, the workers at Microsoft studio Double Fine Productions announced their decision to form a union with CWA to preserve and extend the studio’s commitments to creative excellence, diversity and inclusion, and worker quality of life," CWA said in a statement to Aftermath. "In tandem with requesting voluntary recognition from the company, workers have also filed an election petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to secure union representation. We appreciate that Microsoft has taken a neutral approach and agreed not to interfere in any way with worker’s rights to organize unions.”
