The importance of taxonomists is exemplified in the line “Insects are by far the most diverse vertebrates.”

Had a conversation today about the royal family and it reminded me of one of my favourite paragraphs ever written: Had a conversation today about the royal family and it reminded me of one of my favourite paragraphs ever written www.irishtimes.com/culture/tv-r...
Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.

Beyond this, it’s the stuff of children’s stories. Having a queen as head of state is like having a pirate or a mermaid or Ewok as head of state. What’s the logic? Bees have queens, but the queen bee lays all of the eggs in the hive. The queen of the Britons has laid just four British eggs, and one of those is the sweatless creep Prince Andrew, so it’s hardly deserving of applause.

Is there a name for when an unlucky thing happens but conditional on that unlucky thing happening it was the luckiest version of what could have happened? You get a rare illness but it’s the least damaging (& rarest form) of that illness? I feel there must be a #dnd term for it.

The “principle of indifference” is often presented as an intuitively obvious motivation for specifying “non-informative” prior models. Unfortunately that intuition quickly falls apart in many common applications.  A long thread about applied probability theory!

New paper alert! The ways we collect and analyse data in ecology (and epidemiology and elsewhere!) are increasingly complicated. To make good inference, it’s necessary to model these observation processes with the same diligence we apply to the biological process (1/7) doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...
