The smallest bat in North America is the canyon bat (Parastrellus hesperus), also called the western pipistrelle or American parastrelle.
They weigh about 3–6 grams, the weight of a US penny, sheet of paper, or teaspoon of sugar.
In flight, they're sometimes confused for moths or butterflies.
