This article made me ill. It's clear that the Israeli army is massacring Palestinians daily, but to read it in the soldiers' own words...they're just "following orders." "It's a killing field," one soldier said. "Our form of communication is gunfire." www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...

love thinking alongside my students about the narrator’s “proximity” to a character… proximal to what? their articulated thoughts? their unarticulated feelings? their heart? their skin? how close is the “close third person” really?!

Wrote about the NEA and The Kennedy Center and how these moves might be bad for trans art, but they certainly won't be the end aftermath.site/kennedy-cent...
It’s strange to be so angry and sad about the loss of horizons I never thought it was possible to sail toward, but while the Trump administration might own the institutions, they can’t ultimately do away with trans art in any meaningful sense. At my core, I’m not afraid of them; Trump and his cohort don’t matter to me in a way that really matters, despite how very bad and dangerous and even unlivable they are eager to make my life. My confidence comes from a lot of places–my politics, my faith–but also from trans art, from the work we’ve made with and for each other for decades upon decades, which didn’t depend on them for its existence and doesn’t now. I’m sad about the losses we’ll see in the next four years and maybe beyond; I mourn the art we won’t get because of this. But that art found its way before, and will still, and will again. We never needed them, and we still don’t need them, and they’ve never been able to stop us.

one of key functions of immigration raids & crackdowns is not to actually deport all migrants/refugees but to deepen conditions of social precarity & labor deportability. to make migrants more vulnerable to exploitation from bosses & landlords & banks, and to create scapegoats for austerity policies

once again thinking about this passage from David Lynch's book Catching the Big Fish
excerpt reads: "I hear stories about directors who scream at actors, or they trick them somehow to get a performance. And there are some people who try to run the whole business on fear. But I think this is such a joke -- it's pathetic and stupid at the same time.
When people are in fear, they don't want to go to work. So many people today have that feeling. Then the fear starts turning into hate, and they begin to hate going to work. Then the hate can turn into anger and people can become angry at their boss and their work.
If I ran my set with fear, I would get 1 percent, not 100 percent, of what I get. And there would be no fun in going down the road together. And it *should* be fun. In work and in life, we're all supposed to get along. We're supposed to have so much fun, like puppy dogs with our tails wagging. It's supposed to be great living; it's supposed to be fantastic."

35. aging is a funny, gorgeous, achy little miracle. 🌀 here’s a poem from We Contain Landscapes, forthcoming with @tinhouse.bsky.social in March
Beloved,

you gather me. I am not petals, though I have eaten wildflowers on greens in that glow particular to the other planet, as Mitosz described it, that is California, where I walked through salt and fog and found Mary enshrined in chalk on a gash of rock and watched the waves devour themselves til my phone died, so that I was forced to rely on the generosity of strangers, and I did take a photo later of said plate, marveling while sending it to you from the aloneness I'd traveled there to make something out of. Please send a photo of your face. Is it not my purpose to see where, exactly, laughter has rivered around the eyes I adore? There was a donkey in Petaluma with a soft, steady gaze. I will not turn away from the ache of this world. I'm trying to feel my feet. Let's cry enough to submerge, up to our ankles at least. Don't keep your grief from me.
