A hedgehog extravaganza here tonight. Four at once, two mini, one midi, one maxi. The two minis and maxi are featured in the below. Assuming that's their mum, being a hog parent looks exhausting... The little ones have been feeding perfectly fine on their own since we first saw them. Not tonight!

I'm assuming there is no point trying to rescue these unless we know the food plant of the caterpillar. Any tips, or do we just let nature / window cleaner take its course? #TeamMoth

When it rains, it pours. But unfortunately not with water, #hedgehogs. Came down for lunch only to spot a teenie one, 140g, on our path. Scooped up into a box. Went back outside to check for others & found another two out. Much bigger ones though, 750g & 1kg+. Off to the rescue for all of them!

Three new moths for our garden caught overnight, out of 13-ish species. A Shoulder-striped Wainscot, a Sharp Angled Peacock & a Meadow Grey. Also in the trap, but not new, one of my favourites - a Pale Tussock. I do love a furry moth! #TeamMoth

ObsIdentify is going for 100% Ingrained Clay for the first two pics, but they look so different! And neither really looks like the Ingrailed Clays in our book. Can the experts at #TeamMoth help? And is the 3rd one a Shoulder-striped Wainscot & 4th a Meadow Grey?

18 species in the trap last night, which is the highest for our garden. However, I have a feeling we lose a lot before we get to check. I'm pondering a new trap. We have the NHBS one linked below. We like travelling with this, but not averse to having non-collapsible. Any recommendations #TeamMoth?

#TeamMoth is this a Zeiraphera insertana? ObsIdentify suggested such with great confidence, but it's not in my book. Online info suggests it's a bit early flying, but have had that with other species this morning. It has been a bit warm!

Managed to snag two tickets for tonight's canoe safari up the River Axe, run by Wild East Devon & Axe Vale Canoe Club. Absolutely glorious. We saw the sand martins, swifts, a marsh harrier, mullet, and jellyfish that make Seaton Wetlands their home. And a lot of inquisitive cows. Highly recommended.

Taken by a friend in Scotland. What's going on here #TeamMoth? Apparently the caterpillar reacted when gently prodded with a blade of grass, but wasn't moving otherwise and it looks like it's been turned inside out. I'm assuming it has come to some kind of grizzly end. Perhaps Drinker Moth?

A day of gardening and you come across all sorts of beasties. I think this is a Jersey Tiger Moth caterpillar munching on a borage seedling in our greenhouse. Relocated to somewhere a bit safer with plenty of its preferred food to hand. Is #TeamCaterpillar a thing on here, as well as #TeamMoth?

Came down to the moth trap this morning to find a Puss Moth hanging out on a terracotta pot nearby. These are one of my favourite moths. Furry, spotty, stripey, ridiculous leg warmers, dramatic wing markings reminiscent of spalted beech and streaked with gold like a kintsugi pot. Perfect. #TeamMoth

Well the very persistent and frustrating cloud patch over East Devon cleared just enough for us to capture red and green #aurora from our drive. Even saw green patches moving with the naked eye. Never thought that'd happen here! We headed out to get an unobstructed view northwards. Wow.

Yesterday we pulled onto our drive after around 11 hours driving home from holiday (which followed 9 hours the day before). We were exhausted and we couldn't wait to unpack and stop. But lo! What is that teenie brown ball wobbling across our drive? My heart sank. It was a teenie hedgehog.

Today was a day of chores in the garden. One job was pruning some of the very whippy growth from the damson so it doesn't get damaged in the wind. Found a number of these outrageous Vapourer Moth caterpillars living on it. Love 'em.

I love crows. This one was getting frustrated by not being able to reach the last fat ball. It tried swinging the feeder to no avail, but then realised if it pulled the feeder close & held it with one foot, it could tuck in. So clever, characterful & very good at eating our fat balls!
