Using neutral terminology is the best way to counter misinformation. Smart, reasonable people can be misled, but if you open by calling people “anti-vax assholes” or whatever, you’re not likely to convince anyone. There’s no point in speaking exclusively to people who already agree with you

Instead I’ve been using “anti-vax influencers” which distinguishes them from normal folk and focuses not on what they do to vaccines, but what they do to people. I’ve more recently started using “vaccine alarmists” and “vaccine alarmism.” Do with this what you will.

1. It’s too easy to have it accidentally apply to the merely hesitant, who then feel attacked and driven further into the safety of that community. 2. It focuses on what those people are doing to vaccines…they are “against vaccines.” But that’s not actually their job. Their job is scaring people.

Normal people worried about vaccines: “vaccine hesitancy.” This is good, I like this term. Powerful people making money and gaining power by making people terrified of proven-safe medical treatments: “anti-vaxxers.” Ok, but actually I don’t like this term.

James always taking it too far.
A knight named Blackheart the Conqueror in all-black armor with horns and the face of a monster. Their eyes are glowing red. They are chasing after their two pet dogs which are very cute. In the background is their home with a castle and in-ground pool. The pool has a four-sided fence. Blackheart shouts, “Good girl, Scrapheap! Keep going! James! Play nice!” The text reads: Blackheart the conqueror is having a great summer! He’s got a fence around the pool and knows it will keep kids safe from drowning. Fences should be at least 4 feet high, not climbable, and surround the pool. The pool should only be accessible through a self-closing, self-latching gate. Install a door alarm from the house to the pool.

"Understanding" is a pretty beautiful compound word...in this case "under" has a somewhat archaic meaning of "among" (also still present in "under these circumstances.") So understanding is "Standing among" as-in a mind that figuratively shares space with the concepts in question.

Foxes In Love @foxes-in-love.bsky.social · 27/06/2025
A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, Blue walks up to Green, who is studiously staring at a vase, deeply puzzled.
Blue: What are you looking at?

Green looks up to Blue, still frowning in confusion.
Green: What colour is this vase?
Blue: ...Purple?

Both Blue and Green turn to look at the ambiguously coloured vase.
Green: But is it rose taupe, or opera mauve?

Blue sits down, looking at Green, who is still staring at the vase in defeat.
Blue: I think you watch too many paint mixing videos.
Green: I do.

🔥 Extreme Heat Advisory🔥

We're facing extreme heat temperatures in the area. Please stay indoors, if at all possible, this week. That being said, we know that not everyone may have access to a cool location, so here are some resources to cool down in the City:

Entry to all city pools will be free for residents on Monday and Tuesday, as capacity allows. Address verification is required - Allentown students can show their school ID for admission. Non-residents will be charged the daily entrance fee.
🏊 Cedar Beach Pool 101 N Ott St
🏊 Irving Pool 731 N Irving St
🏊 Mack Pool 1901 Mack Blvd

From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, the Fire Department will be stationed at four parks:
🚒 Fountain Park: 961-967 Martin Luther King Jr Dr
🚒 Roosevelt Park: 271 Camp St
🚒 Jordan Park: 1001 N 6th St
🚒 Union Terrace: Soccer fields across from UT Elementary

Our spray parks also offer people another way to cool off! Open 11am-8pm daily, no cost:
💦 Bucky Boyle Park: 10 Pump Pl
💦 Old Fairgrounds: 5th St between Gordon & Liberty St
💦 Valania Park: 531 Union St

Extreme heat is dangerous for everyone, especially young children and older adults. Stay hydrated, stay indoors with air-conditioning if possible, and check on relatives and neighbors. Take extra care of pets during this heatwave. For heat-related emergencies, please call 9-1-1.

New beach umbrellas that are less likely to terrify the dinosaurs are now available.
A tyrannosaurus rex walking on a beach. Suddenly, it spots an overturned beach umbrella. The dinosaur is filled with fear! The text reads: This summer, the scariest thing on the beach is your old beach umbrella! When buying or renting a beach umbrella/anchor system or a beach umbrella anchor, look for a label on the anchor that shows it meets the new safety standard. Look for anchors with a label indicating “MEETS ASTM F3681 FOR WIND SPEEDS UP TO 30 MPH.”
