Morning all, been a busy start of the year and photography has taken a backseat for a number of weeks. However, got the chance to spend a few days on the Fife coast

I wrote about taking this photo in my latest Substack. A “stop the car” moment when we finally saw some atmosphere. No time for tripods, just grab the camera and run. Also a look at working in black and white, which I seldom do. open.substack.com/pub/bullochp... #photography #landscapephotography
A seascape with heavy foreboding skies, however a break in the clouds lets some light through creating a pool of colour on the sea. From the Faroes.

I was bemoaning the lack of fresh “subjects” when I remembered this. This is what my photography is all about - observation. Even with a subject in mind it’s rarely what I end up photographing. #GetOutside www.AndyMacD.co.uk #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #fineart #Scotland #nature
A shattered deciduous tree surrounded by pines. That’s the literal description, but what I saw was:

- the relationship of a tiny original tree surrounded by huge overbearing farmed trees.
- the way the light hit the horizontal branches “reaching” towards it. I couldn’t decide if that was in that or embrace.
- the darkness and density of the wood behind isolating that little tree.
- the directional flow of the branches and the contrast of the deciduous trunk being upright and static.

Taking the time to observe, is far more important to me than choosing a compelling subject.

In the end the important thing to remember in photography is just to get outside, observe, tell stories even if just in your my head and photograph the whole rather than the subject.

A few from the B&W half of an old project and book never made real of mine “As the Sun Sets”. Always envisaged a pair of books, one colour, one black and white, of these garden portraits and moments of introspection…then it all got too expensive and my ADHD gave up on completion lol.

Last light Just back from a week in Wester Ross and Scotland did us proud.....5 consecutive blue sky days and I mean blue sky. Literally wall to wall sunshine, not a cloud in sight for the vast majority of the time; little if any wind. Opinan dunes as the sun disappeared. #Sharemondays2025

A day spent in the dunes yesterday, definitely my happy place. Here are a few random images of fur-like maram grass, a roost of jackdaws getting ready to bed down for the evening and a rather delightful bit of fencing.

A few more character studies and compositional snapshots from the other day. Sometimes you can’t beat an hour parked on a tripod with a long lens just editing the show in front of you. Tweaking, finessing, playing. Great fun.

A river delicately snaking in the Icelandic Highlands, fed by the last snow melting… That little spot light really caught my eye so I had to capture it. Captured from a bush plane. #bluesky #photography #scapes #landscape #aerial #art #nature
A river snaking along a lush valley in the Highlands of Iceland. The water comes from the last snow melting on the distant mountains. Overall ambiance is dark, and there is a light pit illuminating a small area just at the foot of the mountain.

I often try to make a book structure reflect the book content in some way. Eg a block structure of a dry stone wall and also a concertina to emphasise the length of a wall. The photos can be removed from the book and re-positioned by the user. Happily sold. 📷 #photobook #artistsbook #handmade
