They replaced the motherboard, which means the soldered on disk Luckily I had a few days old Time Machine backup on an external drive. Nix store is intentionally excluded from backups so I had to re-set it, which was a good opportunity to move from DetSys installer to the official fork.

There's a chasm between easy-to-use but imperative vs declarative but hard-to-use that's in my opinion totally artificial. Not enough tools overcome this by making the UI user-friendly but making the output the source of truth. Some examples: Gparted - Disko nix install - environment.systemPackages

I find the LLM technology fascinating, and personally use it in my work and personal projects (trying to be as ethical as possible in my personal use) But I'm getting increasingly convinced that it's bad for us. Not like water usage or theft aspect, or its dangers, but when it works as designed.

We don't owe it to be nice to those who don't believe in equality and human dignity. It doesn't even have to be that. Annoying people in our communities poison the well and tolerating them is doing a disservice to everyone else. Let's be intentional about whom do we treat nicely.

It's probably terrible timing (since Apple is introducing ads to Maps) but I've fully switched from Google Maps to Apple Maps. Everything Google has made great in the past is becoming terrible and I want to move away from that. At least I've paid Apple money, why not use their product?

Every time I think I'm at peak Nix, I rise to new heights. Today I started managing my Macbook with nix-darwin. Next on my list is to start using home-manager to manage my dotfiles across different machines. Nix makes me live in the year 3026.

I take my implied criticism back, Svelte is cool! I projected my disdain for people who shit on React for all the wrong reasons. Different tools make different mistakes hard to make, and I prefer to err on the side of correctness in exchange for maybe speed and bundle size. But the tradeoffs exist.

The new llama.cpp webui is broken for me, and I don't know if I should blame AI or svelte for this. I saw some store refactors and now one thing is changing multiple things. Classic inconsistency problem. I know everyone loves to shit on React but you don't get bugs like these with it.

When I decided to invest in running local models, my expectation was that these models would get better and I could survive a rug pull when cloud providers decide it’s not worth giving theirs away for free or cheap. I honestly didn’t expect this to happen this soon.
