All of this has been proven effective in cities with similar systems to Toronto, like Melbourne. Even if we can’t do it right away, why not plan for it? #ttc #ttcriders #topoli #torontotransit

To do this, we’d also need streetcars with one driver’s cab at each end, much like our subway trains here in Toronto. This would let streetcars use the modular tracks to turn around and continue serving riders…no loop needed!

FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 12h
Modular track segments, like those used in Melbourne, can *keep streetcar lines running* right up to the edge of construction zones. Riders can then hop on another streetcar on the other side of the construction, and continue their journey.

Road closures in Toronto heavily affect the streetcar network, sometimes for months at a time. The upcoming 504 diversion on King West is a prime example of this. The work being done is important—there’s no denying that—but it also causes a lot of disruption to transit riders.

Operators would be able to quickly change and verify switches electronically, without ever having to leave the drivers seat. That means more time moving and less time stopping. Follow us to help bring Toronto’s streetcars into the future. #ttc #ttcriders #topoli #torontotransit

Both of these changes would make your commute faster by: 1) Ending the need to stop at each switch to confirm the direction 2) Eliminating the 10 km/h speed restriction through switches

Crews are currently replacing streetcar tracks on King West that have reached their end of life. During this work, we *should* be installing newer double-point switch designs and modern control systems.

The TTC has released a survey on proposed updates to their service standards. It includes various changes to reliability, crowding, and best of all, streetcar stop spacing, which is one of the 10 items in our plan!

Yesterday, Sep. 21, we sent out pledges to a total of 175 city council candidates running in the 2026 Toronto municipal election. Candidates were asked whether they will work implement the policies from our 10-point plan if they win on Oct. 26 🙋
Summary of the pledges we sent out to candidates.

As follows:

Prioritize Public Transit
Make Transit Signal Priority more powerful, remove left turns where possible to speed up bus and streetcar routes, and split up pedestrian crossings to enable more adaptive and dynamic transit signal priority.

Improve Travel Times
Review and act on overly restrictive slow zones and operating practices, and rebalancing stop spacing to speed up vehicles while maintaining access.

Fix Switches
Modernize the outdated switch control system for streetcars, end the practice of stopping at every single streetcar switch, and begin installing double-bladed switches in the streetcar network.

Streetcars of the Future
Invest in a modular track diversion system so that streetcars can safely navigate construction zones without lengthy detours or bus substitution, and plan for double-ended streetcars in future procurement.

Every day on city streets, cars, trucks, and TTC buses are allowed to drive past bus stops and traffic lights at full speed. Why should the Scarborough Busway be treated any differently?
1210
FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 04/09/2026
FastTrackTO has learned that the posted speed limits for buses on the brand new Scarborough Busway will be 30 km/h near stations and signals. 🐌 This is disappointing, and reduces travel time savings that the busway is meant to provide. Especially re: any express buses.

Good News! Starting May 24, TTC streetcars will now be able to enter signalized intersections and crosswalks at the speed limit. They are currently required to slow down to 25km/h. Some speed restrictions along the Queensway will also be removed.

In Toronto, however, our communication equipment is in dire need for updates and adjustments in order to be more effective at its job. Existing sensors need to be moved or tuned to allow for more accurate detection of vehicles, and new technology can also help.
130
FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 25/04/2026
What's even better, is that Active TSP can adapt and compensate for streetcars and buses that are delayed, allowing them to catch up 🏃 and stay on-time ⌚!
120
FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 25/04/2026
Thus, phase *insertion* or *rotation* changes the phases around to give transit a green light as quickly as possible. To do this, it uses sensors and sometimes communicates with vehicles directly. Pretty cool right?
120
FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 25/04/2026
If I lost you at phases, don't worry! Think of phases as the reds 🔴 and greens 🟢 at a traffic light. Each time a light turns green, it moves from the red phase to the green phase. The same applies to walking signals.
130
FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 25/04/2026
If we really want faster transit, specifically streetcars, we need one of two things: 🔄 Phase Rotation OR Phase Insertion ⤵️ (or both) These TSP measures actually add or modify phases at a traffic light to allow transit vehicles to pass through the intersection quicker!
140
FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 25/04/2026
Toronto currently has transit signal priority, but it's far more limited than what it should be. Walking around the city, you may notice that signals extend green lights if a transit vehicle is approaching. This *is* great, but in many places, it's not enough!

FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 25/04/2026
Starting today, we're doing a series where we dive a bit deeper into each of our ten points, and why they're vital to the future of our streetcar system. Today is Transit Signal Priority day! 🧵
A low-angle shot of a gray metal utility pole featuring two sets of traffic lights. Both signals show a red light at the top. Mounted prominently between them is a square white sign with black text that says "TRANSIT SIGNAL." In the background, a partial "THIS LANE" sign with a black arrow is visible under a bright, sunny sky.

Great for speed, and also great for accessibility, because: a) reduced dwell times b) more inclusive to riders with disabilities Nice to knock out two birds with one stone! Thanks to @jacktatttran.bsky.social for the summary. ♿️

Post TTC Board update. Most discussions focused on TSP and stop spacing an stop issues, with sadly no mention of switches (😭). The next report back is Q1 2027 (longer than I would have wanted). Update on operating rules from Fort Monaco (TTC COO) for the Operating Rules Committee on April 21.

This proves that the push for faster, prioritized streetcars is consistent among both advocates and official policy! This is really exciting to see, and we’ll be watching tomorrow’s Board meeting closely. Let’s get Toronto on the #fasttrack ! 🚋💨

What we want: Faster travel times.⏱️ What is proposed: A *network-wide* review of stop spacing - based on international best practices and accessibility standards - to reduce travel times and get you to your destination sooner! This could also result in better stop design in the future.

FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 16/04/2026
What we want: No more "stop-check-go". 🛑 What is proposed: Accelerating switch modernization across the network to safely speed up intersection crossings!

FastTrackTO @fast-track.to · 16/04/2026
What we want: Transit priority at intersections.🚦 What is proposed: Expanding Transit Signal Priority to 70+ intersections this year, AND a massive $48.8M budget allocated for Transit Priority Measures over the next 10 years...securing long term investment!

Line 5's top speed is now 80 km/h in tunnels! Removing unnecessary speed restrictions is 3️⃣ on our ten-point plan, and a great first step to put #Eglinton on the fast track! Now it’s time for the surface section of Line 5, Line 6 and the #streetcars to follow suit. See more here:
