Old World Language Families. I had an excellent professor with this on her wall ages ago
An artistic representation of the "Old World Language Families" resembling a tree, illustrating the Indo-European language family. The branches depict various language groups such as Germanic, Romance, Balto-Slavic, Indo-Iranian, Celtic, and Hellenic, among others. Each branch lists individual languages; for example, under the Germanic branch, there are English, German, Dutch, and others. The size of the branches represents the number of native speakers recorded before the year 0. The design mimics the style of an old map, with the tree rooted in the term "Indo-European."

'Gaslighting' comes from the title of a 1938 play and the movies based on that play. The plots of which involve a man attempting to make his wife believe that she is going insane.

The word ‘tomato’ started out as ‘tomate’ and came from the Nahuatl word ‘tomatl.’ Since the potato had been introduced to the English some decades earlier, the word evolved to mimic the form of ‘potato’—hence the spelling ‘tomato.’

'O’clock’ is a contraction of "of the clock." ‘Clock’ comes from the Medieval Latin ‘clocca,’ which meant “bell.” Church towers would ring bells to mark the passing hours. ‘Cloak’ also comes from ‘clocca’ as the garment takes a bell-like shape around the body.

The word 'clue' was originally a variant spelling of 'clew,' meaning “ball of thread or yarn.” Our modern sense of clue, “guide to the solution of a mystery,” grows out of a motif in myth and folklore, the ball of thread that helps in finding one’s way out of a maze.

Interesting findings about university participation. Over half of pupils in London go on to higher education, a much higher proportion than outside London. Also, as expected, pupils who were eligible for free school meals were less likely to progress to higher education.

‘Sound’ (loud sound), ‘sound’ (safe and sound), and ‘sound’ (water) are not related. ‘Sound’ (loud) comes from Latin ‘sonus.’ ‘Sound’ (safe and) comes from Old English ‘gesund,’ meaning "healthy." ‘Sound’ (water) comes from Old Norse ‘sund,’ meaning “strait."
