But what I consoled my brother with was this: both he and Dolly lived long, full lives, and gave us all so much. At the end of the day, that’s the most any of us can hope for. Lives well lived, with so much to remember them by.

That's it. Lockdowns aren't so much about shooters, but any number of reasons Erratic parent managed to break in and hunting their kids Medical emergency that requires hallways to be clear (I experienced this at school actually) Knife on the premises Lots of reasons we need lockdown regs for

K Fardell @fardellk.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
True. I know when I was in education, I don't recall any lockdown drills. Maybe it was a regional thing But certainly now, it's a more regulated thing. Even with just a brief look, NASUWT was calling for a more concrete strategy in 2017 And every school I've seen so far has a clear lockdown policy

K Fardell @fardellk.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I was about to say this Every school has to perform a lockdown drill, and an invacuation drill at least once a year, as standard, in addition to regular fire drills I've worked in education for about three years, and this has been the case across all of them. Probably gone on longer than that too

Yes, if a child is always quiet, worry, but that isn't the criteria. The DSM isn't saying a child should always be quiet. If a child is playing football, I would expect them to be loud. If they're drawing, quiet (which, quiet ≠ silent) I find this whole documentary offensive to my entire being

K Fardell @fardellk.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Also, her use of the word 'always' doesn't feature in the DSM. It doesn't say 'completely unable' just 'often'. I would read that as a child is unable to engage in quiet play where appropriate, e.g., mindfulness arts and crafts type provision

As someone who works with children, I do wonder how many of these people actually have a full view 'If you had a child who always played quietly, you would be worried about them' Anecdotal, but I have known a number of children who can do so. Children happy to play with building blocks quietly.

Watching 'The Great ADHD Myth' so I can judge it for myself. Not even halfway through, and I feel like I'm going insane, there's so much shoddy work One child does not a study make So many statements which boggle the mind Almost no counterarguments, and the lightest ones get an immediate 'but'

I'm excited to get my blu ray copy as well. I read the book the other week, and was so moved. Didn't get to see it, so this'll be my first time And yeah, physical media releases can be weirdly spotty. I'm still bitter that EEAAO never got a physical UK release

A lot of schools are pretty variable. I've seen some that are amazing. And others that are not Though, stats show that it's difficult to get new teachers to stay in the profession Unfunded pay rises, which means less money for essentials The send crisis Education isn't great, one could argue

Two types of people will see this. The first type is the emotionally shallow person who just sees Al and that's it for them. Everyone else will think about the emotions it created for a self-aware being they personally don't know and understand that cetacean captivity is wrong. I love it for this!

I have to say, it's making me feel a little insane hearing commentators say Ed Miliband shouldn't be chancellor because of his "ideological zeal" for Net Zero, in a week where temperatures are so extreme that my kids are being sent home early every day and it's regularly 30 degrees inside my house

I remember growing up, there seemed to be a lot of fuss over E Numbers, but very little discussion over what they are. When they're just shorthand for stuff inside food. Including e.g., vitamins Ultra processed is just the sucessor to old food/health anxiety, and will be replaced itself in time

This is exactly it. The work is the point.
When I assign analysis, I am not trying to extract a polished product; I am trying to put the student’s mind through resistance in order to make it stronger. Offloading the struggle to a chatbot does not “free students up for higher-order work.” It deprives them of building the strength to do any substantial cognitive work at all.

It's insane they think that Maybe not adding much with this, but when I was reading up on CLT, I learned that our brain processes reading and auditory input in the same region. Our brain treats reading like an auditory process. The same process happens whether we listen or read

My family has a bunch of paperback copies through my dad. The only secondhand ones, are a copy of I Shall Wear Midnight, which I found whilst on holiday, and I think Wyrd Sisters, which is signed (and a misprint iirc) Besides that? Every book is either new, or original printing I think

Very possibly. Reflecting on it, and doing some more reading, we were doing it well ahead of it being standard policy I also don't remember ever doing anything like Brain Gym when I was at school, so maybe my school/LEA was just really on it

Yeah, Phonics allows kids to make informed attempts at getting the word right. It's easier to teach the exceptions as you mentioned, than to try teaching most words they may encounter. Looking online, the average person knows about 20000 words. Trying to teach to that would be herculean

K Fardell @fardellk.bsky.social · 26/03/2026
I recently found my old phonics book when I was helping clean my parents bedroom. That would've been from around 2005 probably, so. Some anecdotal evidence that it was more mainstream at the time

It's an excellent time, but it is turn based. Main difference is not getting hit is down to you and your skill, not chance. But even so, that may not be enough of a difference if you don't like turn based

Also, on reading the article: Not all unis have robust library teams to digitise resources. And also, some students will commute in from afar (I knew some who did this) Not being able to easily access phys resources can be everyday thing for them, yet they just have to deal with it
010
K Fardell @fardellk.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
I do wonder how much of this is spurred on by 'I didn't get the student experience' which... The experience isn't, what you pay for And I do sympathise, I missed out on lab experience. But my uni did try and slot some in. Some Unis could have done more, sure, but a pandemic isn't a common thing

It's such a joke. I'm midway through N4, and focussing on consolidation of what I've already learned whilst I have some work in, and I've been at it for a much longer than a year (granted, that was life being life)

K Fardell @fardellk.bsky.social · 04/01/2026
Skimming this (will read in full later), and it's really interesting. The bits I have read bring Terry Pratchet to mind The matter of material, openings, rarely writing in defined chapters. And of course, his use of footnotes. Definitely gonna read it fully later, and reflect on it for a bit

K Fardell @fardellk.bsky.social · 16/10/2025
I've experienced that somewhat. I learn new vocab via SRS to start, but hearing/reading a word/grammar used in context can be really helpful for consolidating them. Sometimes, it also helps a word to 'click' in my brain, when I otherwise struggle to remember it

This is why I get mad when people say it's easy and imply that people who don't pass N1 after a few years aren't good enough. As Dr. Robertson says, the JLPT isn't the only measure of Japanese ability. Speaking, reading, and writing fluency are different from test taking ability.

Exactly! Like. For me. I can read graded readers, and maybe understand a good. 40-50% of it, without much thought. The rest, I need to actively parse. And that is. Okay. For now. To be able to do that, in spite of life being. Life. Is big, for me. And I can still grow, however long it takes

It's taken me... Maybe, 5 or so years to finally get through learning N5 Grammar points. Largely due to turbulence in life (University, job, teacher training, etc.) and also finding the right way to learn for me. If I tried to just. Cram it, I would have burnt out, long ago

This is really dumb. 1. Thinking getting N1 in 1-2 years is an "incredibly attainable" goal is dumb, because it's actually impossible for the vast majority of people. 2. Belittling people who learn a certain way is dumb because everyone's different. We can't all get fluent from Anki and grit.

Slow progress in learning Japanese. But I have just a little bit more to go in Marumori before I finish the N5 content. Finding most of it is sticking, and with every lesson, I'm now getting further and further than I did in my first attempt at learning.

Probably 'forgive yourself when you haven't been able to do much study due to work. Life can be hard and busy, and accepting your small wins, even if it is just reviewing 5 pieces of vocab, can help keep you on track long term' I've done a hard reset on learning cause I didn't do that to be honest
