Two years ago, I heard that Taiwan's govt had unearthed surveillance files from the secret police of its authoritarian era. They were finally becoming open to the public, nearly four decades after Taiwan's democratisation. I wanted to see what was inside: www.economist.com/1843/2025/05...

"Ants solving a geometric problem and it's amazing." This is a great example of 'emergent phenomenon': - None of the ants understand the problem they're solving. - None of them can see the whole shape. - A series of small decisions or rules add up to something with a new layer of complexity.

The Spiritual Strategic Retreat: a variation of the motte & bailey fallacy where the initial claim is measurable, testable, & falsifiable but when that position becomes untenable the claim morphs into a more spiritual, esoteric, and conspiratorial claim that is near impossible to (dis)prove

I think, in a decade or two, we will look at one of the impacts of social media is that it merged many strands of esotericism with fundamentalist Christianity. UFOs are demons, Atlantis is biblical, non-organic foods are spiritually unclean, etc.

then again, I actually think it's pretty, pretty bad that we went all-in celebrating a summary execution of an unarmed man from behind by a guy whose politics are completely unarticulated in a condition of normative socio-economic disintegration and an enormously powerful fascist movement. feels like we may be waltzing right into a trap where, as loud and noisy social media denizens, we think our quite-scandalous opinions are generally held by the public, while fascists too glory in the random violence, having already used the image of the slaying in at least one death threat against a journalist. seems to me that in unarticulated assassination does little more than escalate the terrain of political violence to that of sneaky murder in a turn that we've all cosigned without a whole lot of real, deliberated thought as to the portent it holds or the potential retaliation against the left in general. I think many ppl are taking the jouissance of a "passage to the act" as revolutionary strategy rather than a mere expression of frustration with the unraveling of justice and accountability, simply redoubling the problem for the rush of enthusiasm and excitement that it brings. the fact that the social contract feels torched during a time of massive transformation in the party system as a whole relates to the urgency of adaptive community responses more than individual vigilantism, which, while targeting individuals, leaves a system both in tact and preparing its counter-attack. I'd love to see a "sobering morning after" evaluation rather than a "glory of tomorrow afternoon" wishlist, but I'm afraid we'll have to wait and are unprepared for what's to come..

Let’s assume the new HTS-led govt in Syria reverts to a Salafist theocracy, the bad end state. I don’t know whether it’s likely, but I do think it would quickly end. Syria has too many power players that HTS just cannot wield a monopoly of violence without widespread legitimacy.

Usually people who believe in wacky ideas don’t take them that seriously. Sure, Bigfoot is real. Ok, what’s the ecological niche that it’s filling? What ape lineage are they related to? How did they cross the Bering land bridge? They must be consuming 5,000 calories per day right?

Sharp view of Sombrero galaxy by JWST. Processed by @yuvharpaz.bsky.social nerdculture.de/@yuvharpaz/1... 🔭 🧪
This image captures the Sombrero Galaxy, a spiral galaxy located 28 million light-years from Earth. Its name comes from its resemblance to a Mexican sombrero, with a bright, central bulge surrounded by a prominent dust lane. The galaxy's core is a supermassive black hole, and it is home to a large population of globular clusters. This image, taken by the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope, reveals details of the galaxy's structure and composition that were not visible in previous observations.

The usual Trump dynamic is he comes out with a batshit insane idea and later a watered down version gets implemented that is still (very) bad but reduces the impact of the initial criticism upon would be voters as hyperbolic Idk what you do with this info tactically speaking???

It’s kinda infuriating how conspiracy theories can’t be falsified to the believer. If there’s an investigation into UFOs and it’s concluded that there’s no aliens whipping around, then to the believer it’s just proof of a cover-up.

Ru posturing with nukes isn’t credible. Coercion with nuke threats rarely works, they’ve done threats before, and no one should believe nuclear retaliation over hitting tactical in Ru will trigger a response. The danger lies with Putin realizing that he’s lost credibility and tries to regain it
