New York’s Crisis Management System, which began in 2012, is the city’s effort to institutionalize violence intervention as a mainstay of the public safety ecosystem. A recent study found promising results in areas with CMS-funded programs, and identified the hurdles interrupters routinely face.

In a Brooklyn Neighborhood, Residents — Not Police — Take the Lead on Preventing Violence
For a week each quarter, 911 calls are routed to community violence interrupters. A new analysis found that precincts with these programs saw a marked drop in shootings.
