Watching first episode of The Bear S5 and I guffawed at “Don’t be scared by his blue eyes.” See, it IS a comedy.

When did the etiquette of using headphones to listen to your phone in public go out the window? Was the pandemic? A father-son duo sitting across from me on the subway are BOTH watching videos without wearing headphones, and I want them thrown jointly in jail.

I’ll add: - It’s “fleshing out” - It’s “complementary” when you mean free, and “complimentary” when you’re paying a compliment (Wait, what do people say instead of “brass tacks”? Do I even want to know?)

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs.

The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force.

Today's @garbageday.email (which is glorious) is about Gen Z's nostalgia for the millennial era. But every generation goes through this. Millennials cringed in horror at their depiction in Girls; Gen Xers cringed the same way at Reality Bites. ("It feels weird to be so marketed to," a friend said.)
Screenshot from Garbage Day newsletter:
"consumption, before we ever saw it reflected back at us. Gen Z, however, is treating these fuzzy reflections as real. A big chunk of the TikTokers sharing millennial hopecore edits say they’ve been binging the 2012 HBO show Girls and seem to think it actually reflected the time period. But I distinctly remember recoiling in embarrassed horror at its depiction of what was meant to be my life in Greenpoint when I sat down with friends to watch the pilot. “How dare Lena Dunham walk past Enid’s,” I yelled at the screen. "That's"

I just watched Sneakers for the first time. They don't make movies like this anymore, do they? Taut, funny, well-paced, ... a dream heist movie. The casting is brilliant enough as it is, and then boom, James Earl Jones! Also, is this the funniest Sidney Poitier and David Strathairn have ever been?

Just saw One Battle After Another and it is electrifying. Propulsive, expertly shot and acted, and — surprisingly — often laugh-out-loud funny. It's PTA's best work yet, in my opinion. The trailers (which I found hard to follow) didn't do it justice.

I've been looking up state mottos, and they're often surprising and delightful. - Washington: "Al-ki," a Chinook Jargon word meaning "by and by" - North Carolina: "Esse Quam Videri," Latin for "to be rather than to seem" - Texas: "Friendship," because "Tejas" is a Caddo Indian word meaning "friend"

Text screenshot: Homicides and nonfatal shootings dipped slightly from 2021 to 2022, but then fell off precipitously after that. In 2023, homicides fell nearly 24 percent compared with 2022, then fell another 23 percent in 2024, according to city data. In 2021, there were 726 nonfatal shootings in the city. In 2024, there were 412.

Beyond those trends, carjackings are down 15 percent so far this year, robberies are down 22 percent, and auto thefts are down 34 percent.

Scott, who recalled that “people laughed at me” when he first advocated for a community-based approach, doesn’t see it as unusual.

There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university. University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.
