When I was applying to college last century, Cornell had a terrible reputation for women, even then. It seems the problem has only gotten worse. Maybe frats shouldn't be permitted on campus. Off campus only, so they are under the jurisdiction of "real" police. I don't know what the answer is..

This is one of the most disturbing and important documentaries of our time. It's also a master lesson in why billionaires are bad for society. There shouldn't be 5-6 people who are so rich that there are no guardrails for their narcissistic whims.

So AI has risks. AI companies think we need to slow down. How about we stop subsidizing data centers and compute costs and build the true costs and externalities into the pricing?? Seems like the market could help address the problem if we stopped these sweetheart data center deals.

So many women have this experience of deciding to give in and get it over with. And then question themselves because they "gave in." Giving in is not consent. It's coercion.

Heartbreaking truths. And clear facts highlightung that those who purport to care about protecting children via bathroom laws and the like are really about upholding their white nationalist view of the patriarchy and maintaining their power and control.

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole "infectious only once symptomatic" understanding of infectious disease transmission is knocked on its head as zoonotic disease prevalence increases. Yay climate change.

Really interesting article that is one of the better studies to affirm what many of us already sensed: take it easy way longer than you think after covid (and other illnesses). Don't rely simply on when your outward symptoms have improved. Give your whole body the rest it needs to recover.

Here's to bringing back the term Luddite with pride and solidarity! From the must read book The AI Con by @emilymbender.bsky.social & @alexhanna.bsky.social
From The AI Con: Although in modern parlance the term "Luddite" is associated with anyone who rejects and refuses to learn (and therefore is unfamiliar with) new technology, its origins are more complicated. Recent histories of the Luddites argue that they were not opposed to the ways that factory owners used technology per se, but that they were opposed to the ways that factory owners used technology to displace skilled artisans with workers paid a fraction of their wage, food the market with inferior products, and impose unreasonable and punishing working conditions on those working the machines.

RFK Jr. rolled out that old chestnut again about how healthy Americans were in the 60’s, so here’s a fact check. In 1965: -42% of American adults smoked; it’s 11% now. -The infant morality rate was 24.7/1000; it’s 5.6/1000 now. -Overall life expectancy was 70 years; it's about 77 years now.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

This is a huge problem with tariffs historically! If an American car is $20k and a Japanese car is 15k, slapping a 100% auto tariff on Japan and turning that Japanese car’s price to $30k means that American automakers can raise their prices to $25k and still sell the cheapest car in town.
