VAMPIRE CARNIVAL is a weird one! Feels like a light R-rated TWILIGHT? (Not a knock, necessarily.) The word 'vampire' isn't uttered even once. Guilt and beefcake. Folks seduced by carnies. Horror is saved for the third act. Feels like it wants to start a franchise. Jason Isaacs great fun, obviously.

FIST POWER is a fun one with tons of fisting. (That's what we're calling fighting now, right?) Director Aman Chang Man fills the goofy plot with an insane amount of fight scenes and stunts, but it's lessened by some choppy/close-up editing. Wong I get as he's not a fighter, but Vincent Zhao crushes!

George Santos on the new SPECIAL FORCES is obviously a joke who never stood a chance, but Ruby Rose really shouldn't be there. She is frail as fuck, both physically and mentally, and I think she needs the kind of help a reality show is most definitely not going to provide. But hey, entertainment!

For day six, we're heading to a different small town, and this one is filled with killer kids. A mysterious stone, cult like behaviors, and children unleashing absolute carnage with the new kid in town caught up in the madness. Alan Rodgers' BLOOD OF THE CHILDREN is a brutally entertaining read.

Doh! Just under the wire with this one, but day 5's pick is Charles L. Grant's NIGHTMARE SEASONS. Four distinct novellas connected by the town of Oxrun Station -- Grant's Castle Rock, basically -- all filled with terror, violence, horror, and sadness. No one does emotional horror like Grant.

Related, I woke my younger sister up super early one morning -- I was 11, she was 8 -- to watch SALEM'S LOT on HBO. I'd already seen it and loved it (still do), so I pretended to faint at a handful of spooky scenes. She lost her shit in the best of ways as I scarred her for life.

There are some script issues connecting it to the 1st, and the ending is smaller than everything that precedes it, but it's a very entertaining return to Amsterdam. The big strike against it is the use of AI for one noticeable visual and a green screen for another. I get it if that's a deal breaker.

Full disclosure, I'm in the bag for Dick and love all of his genre films - THE LIFT, DOWN, PREY, SAINT, AMSTERDAMNED - along with his sense of humor and curmudgeonly attitude. He's back on familiar waters here with fun set pieces, a cool canal chase, and an engaging mystery, and I'm here for it.

Pick three is my favorite piece of eco-horror fiction. Skipp & Spector have other bangers (THE CLEANUP, THE LIGHT AT THE END), but THE BRIDGE is an epic ride about the Earth deciding it's sick of our shit -- and then doing something about it. Great, gory novel, and they even released a soundtrack!

Dick Maas' AMSTERDAMNED remains a highly entertaining serial killer thriller. Makes fantastic use of the city's canals with some fun set pieces, a splash of gore, dangerous stunts on tight streets, and one of cinema's all-time great boat chases. Maas is life.

Haven't seen it yet, and I have very little interest given I'm not much of an Iñárritu fan, but I'm still happy to see Cruise taking a big swing away from what's expected of him. Granted, the critical response to it is guaranteed to push him back into action even harder, but it's still nice to see.

Gonna recommend a favorite horror book each day of October, and I'm starting off the month with Iain Banks' THE WASP FACTORY. He went on to become better known for his sci-fi, but his debut novel remains a powerful descent into teenage madness and murder... but told with creativity and dark humor.

The film played havoc with my emotions, some of which I didn't let settle until decades later when I watched Joachim Trier's OSLO AUGUST 31ST. The feelings I couldn't understand in '84, the guilt I misunderstood, hit me like a sledgehammer to the heart in 2011. My heart goes out to the family.

Chad Lowe's 13-year-old daughter died, and they shared the National Suicide Hotline in the announcement. Devastating, and it reminds me of a TV movie of his from 1984 that had a profound effect on me while I struggled to deal with my sister's suicide attempt. He plays a teenager who kills himself.

I'm in the minority on the Left on this, I know, but I'm pro death penalty... at least in theory. There are absolutely cases where it should be used, cases where there's genuinely no doubt as to guilt, but it needs tighter reins given the nature of our justice system.
