Was he a prick in real life? Apparently! But I still love a bunch of Dan Simmons' writing including my pick for day 13, THE HOLLOW MAN. One of my favorite novels that marries horror, sci-fi, thriller, and a beautiful love story into something truly special.

For the 12th, it's all about Clive Barker's THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW! His BOOKS OF BLOOD remain my favorite of his fictions, but this epic is my favorite of his novels. It's a grand dark horror/fantasy, like an R-rated TALISMAN (of sorts), rich in character, magic, and death.

It's Ray Garton's DARKLINGS for my day 11 pick! One of his earliest book, it's a gory tale of satanic horror with black, slithering worms helping the devil turn people into brutally violent maniacs. A lot of bloody fun here. He was raised 7th Day Adventist but escaped the cult and often spoke on it.

Busy weekend, so catch up time again... day 10's pick is Mo Hayder's THE TREATMENT. I first discovered her via the 2014 adaptation of this book, and I've since sought out everything she wrote. Grim, darkly compelling serial killer thrillers with recurring protagonists. For fans of grisly fun.

My horror novel pick for day 9 is a classic... Ray Bradbury's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. I saw the movie first -- in theaters! -- and read the book years later. A fantastic story about youth, expectations, regrets, fathers and sons. Carnival was nightmare fuel (the good kind) as a kid.

These kinds of movies work best when there's at least one character we're rooting for, but these two are such idiots that I was cheering for gravity instead. Viral opening connecting it to the first film is dogshit, and AI used for some vfx, but it still finds some minor suspense. Great end stinger.

Saw WILD HORSE NINE last night and love it. Very much in line w/McDonagh's best (BANSHEES OF INSHERIN, IN BRUGES). Hilarious, heartbreaking, and endlessly human. A kinder film than the rest, but even more cynical? Give Malkovich all the awards (except for Best Reaction Shots which goes to Rockwell).

Heading out to sea for my day 8 pick, Nancy Holder's haunting, thrilling cruise into terror, DEAD IN THE WATER. Aquatic horror is a fav subgenre as the ocean is eternally terrifying in its mystery and isolation, and Holder milks it all for a beautiful, frightening ghost story.

Yesterday's pick, which you would know already had I posted it on time, is THE FUNHOUSE by Owen West, aka Dean Koontz! Still my favorite film novelization as it takes the existing movie (which I love) and adds more meat to its bones. There's more depth to characters and story, and it's a fun read.

VAMPIRE CARNIVAL is a weird one! Feels like a light R-rated TWILIGHT? (Not a knock, necessarily.) The word 'vampire' isn't uttered even once. Guilt and beefcake. Folks seduced by carnies. Horror is saved for the third act. Feels like it wants to start a franchise. Jason Isaacs great fun, obviously.

George Santos on the new SPECIAL FORCES is obviously a joke who never stood a chance, but Ruby Rose really shouldn't be there. She is frail as fuck, both physically and mentally, and I think she needs the kind of help a reality show is most definitely not going to provide. But hey, entertainment!

For day six, we're heading to a different small town, and this one is filled with killer kids. A mysterious stone, cult like behaviors, and children unleashing absolute carnage with the new kid in town caught up in the madness. Alan Rodgers' BLOOD OF THE CHILDREN is a brutally entertaining read.

Doh! Just under the wire with this one, but day 5's pick is Charles L. Grant's NIGHTMARE SEASONS. Four distinct novellas connected by the town of Oxrun Station -- Grant's Castle Rock, basically -- all filled with terror, violence, horror, and sadness. No one does emotional horror like Grant.

TIL that Dick Maas has written three novels set in the AMSTERDAMNED universe -- the same detective investigating other gruesome killers -- but *none* of them have been translated into English. I'm taking this personally as this is probably the worst thing that has ever happened to anyone ever.

Day four, and it's one of my favorite serial killer thrillers... HEADHUNTER is a brutal tale about a team of Canadian detectives trying to stop the slaughter, and Michael Slade fills the pages with gore, mayhem, dark history and twisted detail. There are twelve sequels following the Special X team!

Pick three is my favorite piece of eco-horror fiction. Skipp & Spector have other bangers (THE CLEANUP, THE LIGHT AT THE END), but THE BRIDGE is an epic ride about the Earth deciding it's sick of our shit -- and then doing something about it. Great, gory novel, and they even released a soundtrack!

Dick Maas' AMSTERDAMNED remains a highly entertaining serial killer thriller. Makes fantastic use of the city's canals with some fun set pieces, a splash of gore, dangerous stunts on tight streets, and one of cinema's all-time great boat chases. Maas is life.

Gonna recommend a favorite horror book each day of October, and I'm starting off the month with Iain Banks' THE WASP FACTORY. He went on to become better known for his sci-fi, but his debut novel remains a powerful descent into teenage madness and murder... but told with creativity and dark humor.

The film played havoc with my emotions, some of which I didn't let settle until decades later when I watched Joachim Trier's OSLO AUGUST 31ST. The feelings I couldn't understand in '84, the guilt I misunderstood, hit me like a sledgehammer to the heart in 2011. My heart goes out to the family.

Chad Lowe's 13-year-old daughter died, and they shared the National Suicide Hotline in the announcement. Devastating, and it reminds me of a TV movie of his from 1984 that had a profound effect on me while I struggled to deal with my sister's suicide attempt. He plays a teenager who kills himself.

Its reputation is pretty dogshit, but I rewatched Michael Ritchie's THE ISLAND -- via Kino's gorgeous new 4K release -- and I still love it. A brutal, bloody, B-movie tale of survival pitting a posh Michael Caine against David Warner's simpleton pirates. The father/son dynamic adds to my affection.
