New in @science.org from @hannoseebens.bsky.social and colleagues: invasive species impacts are actually more severe in the Global South, not the North — we'd been inferring severity from report counts, which was misleading. I wrote a short summary here: predirections.substack.com/p/invasive-s...

And your experience is likely biased towards poor writing needing editing and bad use of AI. My point is that you should not dismiss other people's experiences so easily. Let's agree to disagree.

Mmm I slightly disagree, but I understand your premises. IMO the process can be sped up, maintaining quality. But I guess we will see if that's true in the upcoming years. Best

For sure. In my experience, those guidelines are a good reflection of how people use/should use AI in research in general based on current capabilities.

I'm happy to talk about the topic, not personal attacks. Have a good one!

I disagree. Students make the same mistakes and have to learn the same lessons. Best.

Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Good point, and agree on the process. My argument is that LLMs are not a substitute for that process. They can only help speed up the learning. I see that in the essays they provide: they still need to learn all the rules nonetheless. The lessons are the same I had to learn. Just my personal POV tho

Because students are using it anyway. If they are trained how to use the tool, the risk is minimized. Otherwise, amplified.

Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
No, it's not because I believe it. There is plenty of research in support. In science it has already become a cornerstone of data processing and bibliographic research.

Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
That's a real, concrete risk, but not a given!

Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
No, just like you did, this is simply cherry picking. Smartphones are here to stay. PCs are here to stay. Internet is here to stay... So what? We can all provide examples to confirm each other's biases. Except llms are not just hype, and already embedded in almost every aspect of (virtual) life.

Ad hominem not intended! Apologies for that!

This comparison is already factually incorrect.
000
Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Correct, they all required critical thinking. But I still don't see the word offloading. The support of LLMs DOES NOT substitute critical thinking in any meaningful way if you know how to use it. Best!
510
Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
You are entitled to your opinion, but I fundamentally disagree. Students use LLMs every day, whether we like it or not. So I rather help them develop critical thinking using them rather than being against out of principle just because it is a "new technology". That's naive IMO. Best!

I'd add to the conditionals also support in results interpretation (not outsourcing ofc!), but I am not sure about generating prose from verified evidence. I'd add organising ideas along with brainstorming them.

Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
There is no mention of "offloading" in the post whatsoever

Fabio Mologni @fabio-mol.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
LLMs are here to stay. I fear that if we don't teach them how to use it properly, they will simply use it inappropriately. Also, in that paper they used the cheapest models (also already outdated). I agree though that writing is probably where they are the weakest.

I see your point, but this is not what we are saying. People say it's not natural. Data shows it's more than that - it is common in nature. Doesn't mean it's inherently good or bad

In many of the ways we measure 'the good life' — health, work-life balance, faith in government — the US is falling short. And not just a little bit. Over and over, data show it performing substantially worse than similar countries. I call it the American Outlier. www.not-ship.com/america-isnt...

Or the other way around. Both narratives are valid. The question really is what do we value. Nature? Then some habitats need active protection from us. We can't simply use a laizzes-faire approach in those cases :)

Plantations of alien trees aren't great. Period. Plenty of research says otherwise. That said, contrasting the understory it's not necessarily shows that - temperate rainforest are wet and have a lush understory, not so dry, acidic forests

🏵️ Today's #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Broussonetia papyrifera, the Paper Mulberry. 🌲 This plant is a swift coloniser of disturbed areas, including forests. 🍂 It can form extensive, dense stands through spreading root systems, and its pollen is highly allergenic. #SpeciesofUnionConcern #IASinEurope
