People often describe sportswashing as a tactic of 'distraction' and while that might be part of it, the ultimate goal is statements like this from the British PM delivered at a moment of weakness for Abu Dhabi amidst mass uproar & disgust at their behaviour www.theguardian.com/football/202...
"Andy Burnham has said he would be “really concerned” to lose Manchester City’s owners as a result of the club being found guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League rules.

On the day that the Independent Football Regulator confirmed it has powers to investigate the suitability of the Abu Dhabi United Group to own an English club after the damning judgment of an independent commission regarding £900m of sham contracts, the prime minister praised City’s owners for their investment of billions of pounds into Manchester.

“I would be really concerned to lose them,” Burnham said. “They’ve been such a huge partner in the building of modern Manchester, and the building of Manchester City into the global force that it is."“I do actually thank the City Football Group and the wider ownership for the money that they didn’t just put into the Etihad [Stadium] and the campus around it but also into the city.”

Burnham insisted he would not get involved in the Premier League’s disciplinary process, despite the potential impact that punishing City could have on the UK-Abu Dhabi trading relationship, which is worth around £30bn a year.

Despite this, Burnham appeared to express some sympathy for City’s plight by referring to his previous involvement in campaigning on behalf of Everton, who in 2023 were docked six points by the Premier League for breaching profitability and sustainability rules.

“I can’t intervene more in the process,” he said. “It would be wrong for me to do that. It would be wrong, I think, to jump to a conclusion before having really studied all of the detail. But obviously it’s ongoing, and because it’s still contested by Manchester City then I think it’s right that I don’t say much more".

Rainbow Devils speak out against the EHRC's amended Code of Practice, standing firm in support of trans, non-binary and intersex people in the UK. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
The Equality and Human Rights Commission has released its amended Code of Practice.

It remains deeply exclusionary. It prioritises the comfort of others over trans people's ability to access services and toilets, and offers little clarity on how service providers can remain trans inclusive.

This guidance turns the Equality Act from a shield into a sword, one that will further marginalise the trans community in Britain.

Nothing will shake our unwavering commitment to equality for trans, non-binary and intersex people in the UK, in football and in wider society. They deserve so much better than this.

If anyone in our community is in need of further support, you can contact Switchboard, the national LGBTQ+ helpline, on 0800 0119 100

Registrations are now open for the March-April class on modern Lebanese history and politics. All the info you need is here: thefirethesetimes.com/lebanonclass/ (Link also includes free resources on Lebanon) And here's a nice testimony by @diplomatofnight.com who attended the January-February class
The Fire These Times MasterclassesBeware of Small States: Lebanon since 1975

In this 5-parts class, you will get an overview of Lebanese history and politics from 1975, with a focus on the so-called ‘postwar’ from 1990 onward.

We will go beyond sensationalist headlines and shallow coverage, and beyond simplistic, top-down explanations for the country. Instead of a linear timeline of events, which you can get from Wikipedia anyway, you will get a messy one. After all, politics is not linear. Political actors evoke events from the recent or not-so-recent past as part of their politics in the present.

I will also use personal stories as someone who grew up in Lebanon in a very conservative, at times even Far Right, Christian environment, to explain how my own personal journey away from right-wing and towards left-wing, quasi-anarchist, politics helped me understand Lebanon better.

Classes are on average 2 hours long, once a week.Over the last few years, places like Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon have dominated the headlines. But if you want to actually learn what these places are like, what animates the people who live there, and what the future might be for them, you need to sit down and take it slow and learn from an expert. Elia Ayoub is one such expert for Lebanon, and his course on modern Lebanon, Lebanese identity, sectarianization, and the struggle for a better future in Lebanon is so illuminating. If you want you expand your thinking and approach this country with a new frame of mind, you should take a course with Ayoub.
