The San Diego River at Fashion Valley is expected to reach the so-called "action" level this morning. That's when barriers go up at low spots and getting around Mission Valley gets tricky. But no significant damage is expected. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Here's how much more rain the weather service thinks we'll get today. This was posted at 4:50 this morning. The mountains could get another half inch from a separate storm Monday and Tuesday, with a couple of tenths more possible in the valleys and a tenth or so at the coast. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

How wet can it get? At 10:30 last night, we'd recorded about 0.3 of an inch of rain here in inland North County. By 7:15 this morning, we were over 2.3. Palomar Mountain is at the top of the leaderboard, with 3.17 as of 7 a.m. This is San Diego's biggest storm since February. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Rainfall totals are climbing, with many hours of at least moderate rain likely into Sunday night. Totals so far are mostly higher in South County, but North County is catching up. The storm is easing the fire risk, at least temporarily, at a time when it is often at its peak. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

A little appetizer rain has been recorded around San Diego County. San Diego has since added another 0.02 of an inch. The strongest gust recorded at San Diego International has been 32 mph at 10:44 a.m. The bulk of the rain is still expected late tonight & Sunday morning. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Haven't been able to say this for many months this hot year: If you live in S.D. County & have automatic sprinklers, you can turn them off & leave 'em off for a week or more. The bulk of the rain should fall tonight & early Sunday, but it should be moist & cool into Tuesday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Rachel bears a slight resemblance to Hilary, which dropped 1.84 inches of rain on San Diego on Aug. 20-21, 2023. At its peak, Hilary was a much stronger storm. I wrote about Hilary for Voice of San Diego as it approached: voiceofsandiego.org/2023/08/18/w... #sandiegoweather #CAwx

As Rachel gets closer, the rainfall projections from the National Weather Service are rising. San Diego could get 1.5 inches of rain on Sunday alone. Palomar Mountain could get 2.5 inches. Then more is likely Monday and Tuesday from a separate storm from the north. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The Colorado River basin's 2025-26 water year (October-September) was the warmest on record. It was also the least snowy on record. Only 16.8% of the (below average) precipitation fell as snow - shattering the previous record low.

Latest look at Rachel, lurking to San Diego's southwest. The tropical storm will approach the region Saturday night. From the weather service: A continued northern shift would increase potential for heavy rain across the county with a southern shift making it more localized. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Didn't know whether to use "it's not too often you see" or "I can't recall seeing." Going with: "This is a first for me." It's a warning & watches map with a coastal flood warning, a tropical storm watch, a flood watch AND an extreme heat warning. All in Southern California. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

It's possible that some spots in San Diego County will experience tropical-storm-force winds from what's left of Rachel, but the National Hurricane Center's current map shows the odds are very slim. #CAwx #sandiegoweather

Yes, the main wave of rain and wind will be Saturday night and Sunday morning for San Diego. The tropical wave will move quickly out to the northeast late Sunday. But then a polar jet driven storm coming out of the north will bring much cooler weather and showers through Monday or Monday night.

Real rain? Rachel (right) is struggling to keep itself together, but the National Hurricane Center expects it to be a strong tropical storm at landfall, likely near the U.S.-Mexico border. Rainfall projections include totals from a separate storm from the north Mon. & Tues. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

S.D. County is now under a tropical storm watch. The National Hurricane Center moved the probability cone back to the north. So far, winds west of the mountains will likely not top 30 mph. Mountains could get 40 mph gusts. Rainfall Sunday to Tuesday estimated at 0.7 to 1 inch. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

In 2025, San Diego never hit 90°. This year, it has hit at least 93° 9 times: 4 times in Sept., 5 times this month. It just missed Wednesday, with a high of 89. Hottest days this year: Oct. 3: 105 Oct. 4: 100 Oct. 5: 97 Sept. 6 & 7, Oct. 2: 95 Sept. 9: 94 Sept. 8, Oct. 6: 93 #sandiegoweather #CAwx

San Diego is now outside the National Hurricane Center's latest warning cone for Tropical Storm Rachel. That doesn't mean the city won't feel impacts. Heavy rain is still possible with the current projected track, but if Rachel veers a little north, impacts could be greater. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

San Diego is now on the edge of the National Hurricane Center's warning cone for Tropical Storm Rachel. But the center notes: "Hazardous conditions can occur outside of the cone." The weather service says Rachel, combined with high tides, could cause some coastal flooding. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The weather service has a harder time predicting weather coming up from the southwest, like Tropical Storm Rachel. There aren't many prior examples, nor weather stations down there. But forecasters are increasingly confident S.D. County will get soaked starting late Saturday. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

A week of record-breaking heat. What's next, a tropical storm? Well, maybe. There's still uncertainty in the forecast, but the National Hurricane Center's warning cone for what is now Hurricane Rachel covers northern Baja & San Diego County Sunday morning. Rachel would then be a tropical storm.

One more scorcher? The weather service expects San Diego to hit 91 today for the 6th straight day. Thursday's high is forecast to be "only" 89 - still 14 degrees above normal. If the city hits 91 today, it would tie the daily record high set in 1951. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

As the reflectivity (albedo) of Earth continues to set new record lows, more of the incoming solar radiation is absorbed by the Earth system, increasing the amount of energy available to heat the oceans, atmosphere, and land, and to melt ice.

Almost all of the moisture from former Hurricane Odalys that was flowing flowing over San Diego County is now southeast of the county and moving northeast. Meanwhile, Hurricane Polo should hit the Baja coast today with sustained winds of around 115 mph. #Polo #sandiegoweather #CAwx

San Diego didn't exactly get drenched last night, but the 0.02 of an inch of rain recorded at the city's official weather station at the airport is the first measurable rain in town in nearly 4 months. The last time the city got more than a trace was May 29, also 0.02. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Polo will likely still be a major hurricane (category 3 or higher) when it makes landfall on the Baja coast. The National Hurricane Center says it probably will still be a hurricane after it crosses the peninsula and the Gulf of California and then makes landfall on the mainland.
