My friend and mentor Jan Null has been forecasting and explaining CA weather for 50 years. He is objective and science-based. There are a lot of misconceptions about El Niño and what it means for California's upcoming wet season. Start with a correct understanding.

After a brutal, humid 103 degrees today in Carmel Mountain, Mother Nature treated our coyote friend and me to this gorgeous sunset. Tropical Storm Marie keeps on giving.

I've followed Daniel Swain for years and he has a great way of explaining things objectively and clearly, from a credible and trustworthy viewpoint.

I encourage this 10-min read if you're interested (or uncertain or scared) about Marie, El Niño and other pertinent issues with our upcoming weather in SoCal.

In this Weather West post, I offer an update on my most recent thoughts re: tropical storm/soon-to-be-hurricane Marie and potential impacts (or not!) in California this weekend. Also: I assess record-breaking coastal SoCal humidity in summer 2026.

Early-season trough will bring cooler weather and beneficial early-season rain to wildfire-stricken PacNW, and may also bring soon-to-be Hurricane Marie’s remnants toward SoCal over Labor Day - Weather West
September 2, 2026 - Daniel Swain - A brutally hot and humid Southern California August and a record-breaking wildfire season across interior PacNW & beyond August ended up being an exceptionally hot month across nearly the entire Southwestern U.S., including across nearly all of SoCal (even coastal areas). In fact, August was (yet again) a record warm month in many locations; in #

Fabulous sunset tonight in inland North County. Even caught some crepuscular rays. Colors lasted a long time and kept evolving into deeper, then brighter reds low on the horizon. #sandiegoweather

The capricious little boy is back. NOAA has declared El Niño is officially here, and now he's a media darling. You'll read and hear a lot about what this means for Socal's upcoming rainfall. And the messaging can be mixed or contradictory. Here are two excellent first takes from trusted scientists.
