When the Trump Administration threatened ocean sensors that help manage fisheries, forecast weather, and understand climate change, I worked with colleagues across the aisle to save them. Our bipartisan bill unanimously passed—and the sensors are back in the water!

After Outcry, Monitors the Trump Administration Tried to Scrap Return to Sea
Under pressure from Congress, a network of ocean monitors that provides vital data to meteorologists, climate scientists, oceanographers and the fishing industry is being restored.

I imagine if I ever asked about anything like economics or jobs when they were still with us the response would have been something like "at least it's not the coal mines anymore, thank God!"

The foundational work of Western philosophy is “these idiots voted to kill Socrates”! Alcibiades was a demagogue who weakened Athens with ruinous war, damaging alliances, and got into trouble involving Persia. Maybe some lessons there.

the funny thing about this of course is that "athenian democracy" was a cautionary tale to the framers, who saw it as unstable and prone to demagogues and tyrants like the one rubio works for

I didn't know my grandparents as most died before or not long after I was born but my great aunts and uncles I grew up around were the same now that you mention it. Though I imagine living through the Great Depression and WWII would tend to make you extremely grateful for anything not that.

Though to split the difference higher than inflation and wage growth prices directly or indirectly caused by fuel prices due to a war of choice mean the legit gripes will keep supercharging the not so legit ones so it will remain the time of economic monsters.

It is more nuanced where he's making a totalizing argument with fuel being the biggest case against. But I think he's right when it comes to how often nonessentials like fast food get talked about with reference to ads from 20 years ago and how expecting that is socio-politically damaging.

What if "I remember when a hamburger was a nickel" on meth? That feels like the state of much of the conversation today. It was always there but now it's stretched and amplified beyond anything we saw old timers wistfully but ultimately fairly benignly bring up.

This is a joke post but I think it’s actually a pretty accurate description of what’s happening: the absolute inability of anyone to shut up about “affordability” and “prices” has raised the salience of the issue and caused people to anchor on the lowest available price for items in living memory.

The Soo Elevator was built in 1916 to handle grain coming in from the Northern Plains on the Soo Line Railroad, back when Minneapolis was the milling capital of the world. After several ownership changes it's now a General Mills oat-receiving facility served by CPKC Rail.

I was OBSESSED with the AVG as a kid. I had a bomber jacket airbrushed with AVG art on the back and after a motorcycle wreck with a broken rib and scapula, an EMT was going to cut it off me and I was like “My dude, I will come up off this gurney and fight your ass in the back of this ambulance.” 😅

And I'll have to do a second coat on all those parts with the bright bronze on top. But once that's done the rest will be less fiddly. Orange cloth for the skirt things and small but simple details otherwise. Almost there!

ExecutiveOtaku @executiveotaku.bsky.social · 17h
Took two sessions to get all the base bronze on them because it's spread put over lots of pieces and you have to be careful about getting it on finished cloth or on the shield center (as you only get the right look with the spraypainted Wraithbone thin coat as the base for the Fuegan Orange wash).

Glass half full maybe they only got so much damage because of dumbass lack of leadership that left them where they could get hit and didn't take defending them seriously.

End of next week! And yeah there are a lot more places that accept cards than even 7 or 8 years ago but I still run into cash only places pretty frequently especially smaller or older businesses and places in more out of the way parts of the country. That and for splitting costs with friends.

A little bit wider than ideal but more flat than the old one. And it should be more sturdy for all the stuffing into pockets and using on the go when I'm in Japan or other places where cash is still common. Nicely made, the lining is old shirt fabric too.

I get the nervousness. You don't want to overturn a near century of cooperation when the Trump regime is on its way out and especially if you think a more normal US is in the medium term offing. Tho if you think the US will keep wildly swinging every 4-8 yrs you should want that automomy yesterday.

Man, for all the talk of greater EU autonomy in tech and economics and policy at least some governments aren't even willing to start testing the waters with conference presentations. I leave whether greater EU autonomy is good or bad to the reader but obviously the window won't stay open forever.
