If the word scares you, this denomination is theistic parody, primarily focused on doing the right thing because it benefits society and oneself, rather than relying on doctrine.

The lesson I took from that was that if we acknowledge we are capable of bias (and genuinely want to be fair) we can spot bias in ourselves and combat it. People who are absolutely certain they view everybody based on merit alone are lying to themselves. Culture is biased: you're steeping in it.

Here’s how we built the “scientific state”. Also the outline of my spring course. In 1862 in the heat of the Civil War, American Hero Justin Smith Morrill got the Morrill Act passed while the slavers were out of Congress and funded state higher ed in the public interest at the Land Grants. 1/?

The more interesting aspect of that study was that people who rated themselves capable of bias were more careful: rated applicants closer regardless of their implied background or sex/gender People who swore they were bastions of even-handedness much more likely to rate along biased lines.

There's that one where they took the same resume (in the sciences) and changed the name at the top: male name, female name... Black-coded m,f names... We already know how that went without even saying.

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

I’m 1/4 through Chapter 1 of @zephoria.bsky.social’s new ethnography of the US census & I am full-on IN TEARS in my lounge room at 10pm. I’ve aspired to be a “bureaucrat for the revolution” for 25 years & this book is giving my battered old heart words for everything I’ve been striving for
Photo of a page displayed on a Kobo e-reader, saying:

… and yet civil servants dedicate their lives to the pursuit of creating more perfect data. The census cannot ever be truly apolitical given that it is at the heart of the politics of the United States, and yet civil servants never stop pursuing the ideals of nonpartisanship. The persistent tension between ideals and pragmatics is what makes the administrative state so critical to a healthy democracy.
Civil servants serve the public through their dedication and persistence, despite the challenges of the work. And despite having bosses who want to weaponize them.
I see the Census Bureau's civil servants as heroes-not
because I believe in bureaucracy, but because these workers are committed to the ideal version of the American project. [THIS BIT IS HIGHLIGHTED] Public servants toil in the shadows, making consequential choices with little recognition, only to be attacked for trying to make the system work for the people. Too often, they're blamed for the Kafkaesque nightmare in which they operate, even as politicians and advocates quietly configure what they are able to do. [END HIGHLIGHT]
This book is, in many ways, a love letter to those civil servants and the kind of institution that enables them to rise to the occasion. If we want to escape our death spiral of polarization, we must stop treating bureaucrats as…

On a person note, interesting that I felt these ideas are "very old"-- they're not ancient or anything. They were just coming to prominence when I was a kid, so people around me were discussing them frequently. Most of these concepts were described in feminist theory in the 1990s.

Honestly, damn
According to Martha Nussbaum, a person is objectified if one or more of the following properties are applied to them:[1]

Instrumentality – treating the person as a tool for another's purposes
Denial of autonomy – treating the person as lacking in autonomy or self-determination
Inertness – treating the person as lacking in agency or activity
Fungibility – treating the person as interchangeable with (other) objects
Violability – treating the person as lacking in boundary integrity and violable, "as something that it is permissible to break up, smash, break into."
Ownership – treating the person as though they can be owned, bought, or sold (such as slavery)
Denial of subjectivity – treating the person as though there is no need for concern for their experiences or feelings

Rae Langton proposed three more properties to be added to Nussbaum's list:[2]

Reduction to body – the treatment of a person as identified with their body, or body parts
Reduction to appearance – the treatment of a person primarily in terms of how they look, or how they appear to the senses
Silencing – the treatment of a person as if they are silent, lacking the capacity to speak

yeah. Objectification is one of the older feminist ideas, though it's so old the starkness of the original meaning feels like it's faded as the term has become normalized. Wikipedia has a good intro: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Objecti...

I always get pretty high trans and genderqueer-identifying folk on my IACC studies, and of course a significant percentage of them have EDS. But many are diagnosed with other IACCs only: ME, or Long COVID, POTS or MCAS. Most typically a mix of all of these plus hypermobile EDS.
