"Can Britain's Broken Energy System be Fixed," on Radio 4 right now, is a really great breakdown of the issues facing energy in this country. But they've fallen into a bit of a trap. The line of argument that green energy is cheaper to produce until you've added in the costs of infrastructure...

I come back to one of the cheaper, most populist policies you could do is to create a 'BBC Sport' channel and ensure it has FTA rights to major live sporting events. Sport is one of our few remaining cultural unifiers. And the BBC is basically giving up on it - cutting budgets and abandoning icons

Basically this way, the AC sucks in air from outside, heats it up and pumps it back outside again. That air never enters your room. Meanwhile, it sucks in air from inside and cools it, and your cool inside air also never leaves the room

You don't understand how an AC works. You need to suck in air to *heat* to pump outside, to balance the air you also suck in and cool. With two hoses you're not heating up your own cooled air to pump outside again

The problem with portable AC units is that they suck your freshly cooled air back in to take away the heat from the compressors and pump it outside, wasting a bunch of cooling by creating a pressure imbalance which sucks more warmth into your room. A second intake hose fixes that

My parents both joined the police in the late 1970s. The stories they tell about how policing worked then are nuts. From the 1980s through to 2010 British policing was transformed massively for the better, and turned into a true professional career. We have undone far too much of that
