If you're submitting a reference letter for a PRFB, I was surprised to not see any option for deleting and reuploading, which contradicts the info provided in the email requesting it. In fact, as soon as you select the file it is uploaded and you can't change it. Was fine for me, but beware.

NSF just announced its GRFP solicitation due in October - deadline varies by field: www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo... Now for the bad news... * NSF estimates they will issue 1,500 awards, down from 2,500+ last year. * NSF removed STEM Education and Learning Research as a Major Field.

New NSF BIO solicitation says expected number of awards is 250-300. Historically, the number of awards is closer to 800-1000 for the Directorate of Bio Sciences: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses... Unless I'm missing large, non-core programs, this seems really not good?

Hey Bluesky! Emerging from my dissertation-formatting cave to share that I defended my PhD last week! So many incredible people helped me reach this point, especially over the last few months as I scrambled to finish in time. I’m lucky to be surrounded by such good friends.
The cover slide from my dissertation defense talk. The background image is of a river flowing through rainforest in Ranomafana National Park, and along the sides are photos of various birds I studied in-hand. The title text reads: “Ecological diversification across taxonomic scale in three adaptive radiations of Malagasy birds”. Below that are listed my name (Anya Auerbach), my advisor Sushma Reddy, and my committee: Sharon Jansa, Keith Barker, Kieran McNulty, and David Fox.

The lab and I are halfway through our final data collection trip to the Smithsonian fish collections. So far we have measured 1236 specimens from 483 species in 75 families. Here is one of my favourite so far, a Galapagos four-eyed blenny (Dialommus fuscus) which is amphibious.
Picture of the front half of a preserved blenny fish on a black background with a ruler beneath. The fish is small and elongated with extraordinary eyes, which are very large with what looks like a double pupil hence the name four-eyed.

Went to Devil’s Fork State Park to see one of our local endemics today - oconee bells (Shortia galacifolia). They are found only in a few counties in southern Appalachia SC, NC and GA and flower only for a couple of weeks in March/april.
Two small plants with glossy veined leaves and tall flower stems (several centimetres) terminating in a delicate white bell-shaped flower with ruffled edges.
