The lab and I are halfway through our final data collection trip to the Smithsonian fish collections. So far we have measured 1236 specimens from 483 species in 75 families. Here is one of my favourite so far, a Galapagos four-eyed blenny (Dialommus fuscus) which is amphibious.
Picture of the front half of a preserved blenny fish on a black background with a ruler beneath. The fish is small and elongated with extraordinary eyes, which are very large with what looks like a double pupil hence the name four-eyed.

Went to Devil’s Fork State Park to see one of our local endemics today - oconee bells (Shortia galacifolia). They are found only in a few counties in southern Appalachia SC, NC and GA and flower only for a couple of weeks in March/april.
Two small plants with glossy veined leaves and tall flower stems (several centimetres) terminating in a delicate white bell-shaped flower with ruffled edges.

Image of a snowy lake shore. The trees and vegetation are covered in snow but just the tops of the rocks covered in snow. In the distance is an island in the grey mist.

I thought I may have been given gummy gymnotiform fishes or perhaps gummy early vertebrate Haikouichthys based on the package illustrations. Sadly what was inside didn’t live up to the expectations - still tasty though!

Nice find on our dog walk this evening! North American luna moth.
Large yellow green moth with long tails on its hind wings and dark brown leading edge of its forewing sitting on tree bark.

Scissor-tailed flycatcher in South Carolina! They are a breeding pair but their nestlings were predated last week. However, we found what looks to be a new nest in a less exposed position so 🤞

Had great fun making these cakes for our two newly minted Doctors in the Lab. The decorations match their thesis topics - fish teeth and a whale fluke.
Picture of a two layer circular vanilla cake with creamy filling and decorated on top with icing sugar and messily piped cream rosettes with four styles of golden fish teeth (multicusped, spatulate, conical and pointed) modelled in fondant icing.Picture of a two layer circular chocolate fudge cake decorated on top with chocolate ganache and a large cookie whale tail cover in white chocolate and rimmed in gold dust.

For this world ocean day I was super fortunate to sit and eat breakfast here watching two endangered Hawaiian monk seals foraging. The oceans are the lifeblood of the planet - donate and advocate where you can.

Lucky shot! Was taking photos of the noddies (seabirds) and they were photobombed by the tuna! Could not have taken this photo if I tried to do so but a very happy accident!
Picture of blue ocean with lots of black noddies, which are dark brown seabirds with light heads, swooping and diving into ocean at the very bottom is a tuna leaping completely out of the water.

We just completed the first of four weeks measuring and photographing 🐠 at the Bishop museum. To my surprise I have found a new appreciation for gobies - so morphologically diverse! Tiny fishes are hard to measure and photograph so the team is looking forward to pseudochromids and labrids soon!

Just snapped this photo of my dog Rosie and an anole sun basking before the frigid temps hit us in SC.

Does my dog need more toys? No! Unless it is a cute clownfish with its anemone and then yes! Happy fishmas to all who celebrate!

My phone is a little confused unless it is using the monophyly argument to define fish!

When I started the US citizenship process in April I didn’t expect to be able to vote in this presidential election but this newly minted American just voted!

A wonderful chance encounter this evening in the neighbourhood - this is the first barred owl I’ve seen or heard here!

My favourite superb owl of the past year - a sooty owl in the Tablelands close to Cairns during ICVM.

While at the fantastic evolutionary morphology workshop at OIST I also managed to sneak away and do some snorkelling, the reef was fantastic and I saw so many new fishes, including Titan triggerfish and a moray swimming - I think grayfaced.

Hello! Still figuring out this place in the sky. Tomorrow will be giving a talk in the evolutionary morphology workshop at OIST but today ran away to Churaumi aquarium with two amazing and inspiring women in science - wow what a day!
