4 is a good start but if you REALLY love a book, you can do better! ...I may or may not have 8 copies of LOTR, not counting adaptations, around in this apartment... ...and two more still at my parents... ...and my mother's old set that was the first one I read...

THREE deliveries in four days that just outright ignored explicit and clear delivery instructions, and two of them who somehow decided not only that, but that leaving a package on a concrete slab *right on the sidewalk* *between tables at the Bridgehead* was a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

If the sun rise, the fans will have a tantrum. If the sun does not rise, the fans will have a tantrum. If the sun enters a weird quantic phase and rises and does not rise simultaneously, the fans will observe it as part of their tantrum.

“Show, don’t tell,” is absolutely terrible advice that can ruin a writer. The intent behind it can be GREAT advice. The three words themselves left to interpretation, the most natural interpretation being to always show over tell? Absolute poison.

Relatedly, without the craving for sequels and pressure to write them, we'd have stopped at the competent, fun children fairy-story original, and never gotten the genre-defining 20th century fiction landmark sequel. Sometimes, writing sequels *matter*. (Hobbit/Lord of the Rings).

I can still hear my mother waking me up that morning, telling me about planes, the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Usually, when a nightmare wake you up, you wake up from it. But that day, the nightmare that woke me up didn't go away once I opened my eyes. Parts of it still haven't.

I kinda would love to see a better balance between a twenty first century, socially conscious form of the old heroic/epic romance kind of fantasy and the more modern novel-style (more centered on the protagonist(s) and their inner feelings and reactions, with a larger emphasis on "realistic".

Canadian messing up the dialect quiz reporting in! Okay, New England with a broad swath of connections elsewhere and some traces of southern is probably pretty close to French First Language Québec English who had southern friends in the early internet days.
A color shaded map of the united states reporting which region my English is most like in red (New England, parts of the East Coast, and to a lesser degree Florida and California) and least like in blue (Great Plains and Upper Midwest)

Whelp. Five years old phone, significantly in need of replacement, and now the only phone/phone os makers I'm not furious at are the ones I somehow trust even less than the ones I'm furious at. Do not love these options.

This would be a valid cause for using the Trumpian name in the US. Not for the both-sideism inflicted on third countries, as if the American names had any legitimacy there.

Herstory is also a name that work in precisely one language and not in any of the very many other languages where the word for inquiry into the past is *still* some form of historia/histoire/history, but no masculine pronoun look anything like "his".

You know, as much as I try not to judge people by their reading preferences, I really have to wonder about people who see a "character who deserved better" discussion and whose go-to answer is an omnicidal supernatural abomination with nigh-unlimited power because their defeat was "cheap".

I say y'all because English is my second language and my english is a mosaic of the different writers and friends I actually got to practice the language on. One of the big pieces thereof being an online friend from Texas. She used it; me using it just came with the package.

You fuckers made me do it. The Racist Academicals Patter Song.
[RACIST ACADEMICAL]
I am the very model of a racist academical,
With footnotes and citations to make bigotry seem credible,

I traffic in ideas that have long since been discredited,
Like human races being real and IQ is inherited!

I’ll sign an open letter that legitimates my bigotry,
My gender ideology is thuggery and piggery,

If criticized it’s academic freedom I will hide behind,
My high and mighty principles shan’t be questioned by your tiny mind!

[CHORUS OF CHUDS]
His high and mighty principles shan’t be questioned by your tiny mind!

We’re going to endure. As we always have, as we always must. But we will remember, too. As we always do. As we remember this was you 400 years ago. This was you 250 years ago. This was you 200 years ago. It was you 100 years ago. So maybe think hard before you say this time it’s him, not you.

Getting seriously tired of writing advice that amount to "you need to write your character as emotionally stunted, communication averse, bad-decision-making people in order for them to be interesting" If that's the only way you can imagine an interesting character, I pity you.

-we've always had people who were "a bit weird". If they were lucky they stayed home or got a job that didn't require much. If they not they were institutionalized -diagnosis happens when demands exceed someone's ability to cope. Our society has vastly increased demands over the last decade

Discomfort-is-good discourse hits in a whole different way when you're the kind of autistic people who were told their whole lives to get used to their "discomforts" (meaning : things that are threatening to incapacitate you) and that it was good for you to take on yourself.

Was having a conversation on this topic just recently. A book (or story or painting or movie or whatever) is not a puzzle with a Correct Solution. It's an experience to think about and with, to chew over and then bring to other experiences.

Rich inner lives is an euphemism for characters who couldn’t actually talk about their feelings in the story to save their lives but who will dump on the reader as if you’re some kind of personal therapist anyway.

How Anglophones feel about Les Mis vs how people who actually had to *read* Hugo (or most other XIXth century White French Male authors, really) in school feels about Les Mis is an exercise in worlds apart. (Why, yes, I said white for a reason. Or three. Or twenty. Or some other count.)

There are two kind of wicked cultured vilains in television and cinema for the past sixty years: those who were played by Christopher Lee, and those who were inspired by Christopher Lee. So saying a wicked cultured vilain is "Christopher Lee coded" is not actually much of an observation.

When you judge people for not being interested in uncomfortable readings, you're judging me. I'm by and large not interested in uncomfortable stories. I respect them, and the people who write them, but I rarely care to read them. I can learn and discover in other ways, which work better for me.

People read for different reason and look for different things in books. Challenge, discovery, escape, comfort. None of them is more valid than the other, and all of them (mostly) have a place in the world of books. Your judgemental takes are what doesn't.

You know what, I'm gonna spell it out. If life is a right (and it is, and should be), then we should be free not to exercise it. We shouldn't be forcing people to live. (That doesn't mean we can't make them take a step back and think, or give them reasons to live, or help what ails them, though).
