A right that we have no choice to exercise is not a right. It's an obligation. A constraint. Imposing such constraint upon others to assuage your own fears (of what you might do with the freedom, or the ones you love might do with it) is still imposing your will on them without any right.

This is your irregular reminder that fandom canon was basically invented by gatekeepers (of which purists are a subcategory), for gatekeeping and arguing about it is using the weapons of the enemy .

(I had misremembered my old French paperback as being here - it's not, that one's still at my parents).

Wait, no, 7 in the apartment. 3 hardcover - French 90s Lee illustrated one volume, English 2022 author illustrated collector edition, and mid-1960s Second Edition ; 1 paperbacks (English), one E-book (applebook), and two audiobooks (Andy Serkis version, on both Apple Books and Libro).

4 is a good start but if you REALLY love a book, you can do better! ...I may or may not have 8 copies of LOTR, not counting adaptations, around in this apartment... ...and two more still at my parents... ...and my mother's old set that was the first one I read...

Miraculously, only one of three deliveries was actually lost, because the first went to a drop-off point instead (and good, because, that was my new phone), and the first person to notice the second package was MC who got it to a safer location by the right apartment door. But still.

Sure, our place is tricky thanks to the landlords not seeing the value of doorbells. But even if you can't call the clearly provided phone number for some reason (such as idiotic employer policy), at least take it back to drop-off if you can't safely deliver! For crying out loud!

THREE deliveries in four days that just outright ignored explicit and clear delivery instructions, and two of them who somehow decided not only that, but that leaving a package on a concrete slab *right on the sidewalk* *between tables at the Bridgehead* was a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Nah, just general commentary on vocal social media fandom born from fifteen years of so of running fandom sites, in response to MC telling me about the latest drama in Heated Rivalry fandom.

And if by some miracle, nothing external happens to cause a tantrum... They'll tantrum over not having a tantrum.

If the sun rise, the fans will have a tantrum. If the sun does not rise, the fans will have a tantrum. If the sun enters a weird quantic phase and rises and does not rise simultaneously, the fans will observe it as part of their tantrum.

I'd suspect a lot of them are making the reasoning that sunlight barely seen while they're standing in a neon-lit office with distant windows at best isn't worth much . Science disagree, but it's a hard sales pitch that they're better off with sunlight they don't see.

“Show, don’t tell,” is absolutely terrible advice that can ruin a writer. The intent behind it can be GREAT advice. The three words themselves left to interpretation, the most natural interpretation being to always show over tell? Absolute poison.

I hate to be fair to our (can) politicians, but I'm gonna be fair to them anyhow... 1) 259th calendar day, but about 179th business day. 2) Not sitting and not working are about as different for MP as being in class and not working for teachers. A fair amount of their job is back in their riding.

Relatedly, without the craving for sequels and pressure to write them, we'd have stopped at the competent, fun children fairy-story original, and never gotten the genre-defining 20th century fiction landmark sequel. Sometimes, writing sequels *matter*. (Hobbit/Lord of the Rings).

I can still hear my mother waking me up that morning, telling me about planes, the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Usually, when a nightmare wake you up, you wake up from it. But that day, the nightmare that woke me up didn't go away once I opened my eyes. Parts of it still haven't.

Though now that I think about it, those few days *did* include my 18th birthday, so notwithstanding the above, I did in fact come of age in the Southern US. Maybe it's magic coming of age stuff.

Given the cheap knockoff thought I was from the Northern North East, and the good original think I'm from the deep south (Actually: French Canadian), I'm not convinced the original is that good...XD (Okay, granted, I did have a close southern friend I picked up the habit of using y'all from)

The fact that the only part of the broad feeling-expressing romance constellation of old still standing is the one part that could never escape being labeled as "for women" does not help my suspicions there.

Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Also, broadly, the idea that emotions lived from within the character's head, are better than ones withessed from the character expressing them carries the heavy stink of "expressing any feeling but anger is unmanly" conservatism, to me.
100
Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Don't get me wrong! I don't want no emotions! Emotions are crucial in heroic/epic romance. You just don't need to be in their head to know what they are, because the characters are actually not stunted adult-children who repress it because god-forsaken society demand you hide your feelings.

Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I want - and badly miss - larger than life characters dealing with larger than life problems in larger than life ways while their emotions are largely something I see from outside, not from within their own head. The former is already bad enough for my empathy; spare me the later please.

I kinda would love to see a better balance between a twenty first century, socially conscious form of the old heroic/epic romance kind of fantasy and the more modern novel-style (more centered on the protagonist(s) and their inner feelings and reactions, with a larger emphasis on "realistic".

I just stumbled yesterday on an old post of mine that expressed similar annoyance with fantasy that’s too busy detailing to us how the sausage is made when what we want is to wonder at how it tastes, look and smell.

Canadian messing up the dialect quiz reporting in! Okay, New England with a broad swath of connections elsewhere and some traces of southern is probably pretty close to French First Language Québec English who had southern friends in the early internet days.
A color shaded map of the united states reporting which region my English is most like in red (New England, parts of the East Coast, and to a lesser degree Florida and California) and least like in blue (Great Plains and Upper Midwest)

Like, I could get another year out of the phone, probably, but almost certainly nothing will be fixed then, there!s vague promise of a GrapheneOS coming to some phone next year but I'm not particularly good at being a an early adopter for new systems, so not super promising either. Blergh.

Whelp. Five years old phone, significantly in need of replacement, and now the only phone/phone os makers I'm not furious at are the ones I somehow trust even less than the ones I'm furious at. Do not love these options.

I'm well aware of their policy. And I agree chosing side is not ideal. But neither is adopting uncritically any decree of any executive, no matter how dictatorial, the moment they are made. Sanity checks are needed. It should takes more to make a real conflict than the whims of one man.

Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
So, being in Canada, I also see lake Ontario ; but I do see "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)", just as other countries see "Lake Ontario (Lake America)". Which to me is the real objectionable part on Google's side. The entire executive arm being at his mercy is another very bad issue.

Quite likely, yes, precisely none of which is any defence of Google's misbegotten approach to this situation.

Different countries insisting on different names DO happen (eg, the Sea of Japan/East Sea dispute), but it's a lot rarer and quite different than linguistic differences. And it usually *isn't* over a one-man tantrum.
110
Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Granted, Égypte/Egypt is not the biggest distinction, but those same French map also use Allemagne over Germany, Pays-Bas over Netherlands, Royaume-Uni over United Kingdom, États-Unis over United States, etc. Different *languages* having different names. Not different countries.
100
Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
You're conflating different *languages* and different *countries*. The English language - whether in Canada, the US, the UK or most other places - use Egypt. It has nothing to do with the map being Canadians (and about a quarter of Canadians map, in French, *don't* use Egypt).
100
Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Conflating what's happening with different languages having different names for a country is really a stretch.
110
Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I'd say it's pretty strongly implied that OP is talking about maps in the same language... Translation and transliteration are wholly separate issues from (real) naming disputes, which are themselves quite separate from whatever tantrump is happening right now.

Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
And now YOU reminded me of it and I just took damage too. Geez. That was where her ignorance (and propensity for cultural appropriation) *really* went on full display.

Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
This would be a valid cause for using the Trumpian name in the US. Not for the both-sideism inflicted on third countries, as if the American names had any legitimacy there.
000
Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
It's kind of *really* annoying to see a word that a LOT of languages use be turned into some kind of inherent misogyny because *it happens to make a good pun in English* (that doesn't translate at all to anyone else).
152
Evie @evieghj.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Herstory is also a name that work in precisely one language and not in any of the very many other languages where the word for inquiry into the past is *still* some form of historia/histoire/history, but no masculine pronoun look anything like "his".
