“In 2019 the median full-service restaurant kept 4 percent of sales. By 2024 it kept 2.8. “The cause is simple arithmetic. Since 2019, food costs are up about 38 percent and labor about 35 percent, while menu prices rose about 32 percent.”

Coconut is a city dog, but she loves car trips, because that means forest walks! She does not exactly worship Satan, but she does occasionally cause mayhem, because it’s fun! She is not afraid of anything, except dark spaces in the hallway when the lights are not turned on. Happy birthday!
A beautiful small dog with fluffy, medium-length hair and an expressive, friendly face sits on a moss-covered boulder. On the boulder is inscribed “Satan 1900-14.” The dog is wearing a harness.

I’d add that Pilsner Urquell imports to the U.S. started by 1873 — three years before AB’s “Budweiser” came into existence — lasting until Prohibition, and picking up again immediately after. It first brewed 1M hl in 1913, making it a very large brewery at an important time for lager in general.

After 12 hours and 45 minutes, we’re done, our fastest firing ever. Digital thermometers tend to get wonky around 1200° C and the highest temp on the display was 1225° (2237° F), but the 1350° cone inside the kiln is down, so whatever. Gratuitous reduction (oxidation) shot:

Unfortunately, it started raining, so we decided to push the firing schedule a bit. We also had to put the digital thermometer into a plastic bag. I handed things over at 1 p.m. when the kiln temperature was just hitting 975° C / 1788° F.
A Voltcraft digital thermometer in a clear plastic bag with beads of water on the outside and condensation on the inside. The display shows 975° C.

Started the kiln fire with kindling at 5:57 a.m. Our goal at the end of the day is to get (well) over 1200° C, burning through most of a cubic meter of wood in the process. All stoneware, no porcelain in this load. This is Nina’s last pottery firing before Keramikmarkt Dresden on September 5-6.

Back at one of the best riverside pubs in South Bohemia, U Sulana in Písek, which just so happens to be about 10 minutes from our summer place. Cyclists, beer, shady trees, grilled mackerel on a stick, playgrounds for the kids, sometimes live music, and the Otava River right there in front of you.
A shot of the beer garden in front of U Sulana in Písek, South Bohemia, Czech Republic. There are wooden tables and benches and people drinking under linden trees. The Otava River faces the pub. Paradise of a kind.
