Marie Howe winning the Pulitzer for poetry just makes sense. Forever grateful to have spent time with her last June, the most generous woman and poet 💖

Fallow: Ian Maleney on migrating his literary journal from web to print

One of seven (!) poems in new @fallowmedia.bsky.social which launched yesterday. You can (and should) grab a copy in gorgeous @booksupstairs.bsky.social fallowmedia.com/shop/fallow-01
Living room floor

Degas dancer chin. Eyes trained from the pillow to the blinking TV. Unwavering. Flat chest strained upwards. Wonder if it would split in half neatly, like a piece of fruit, or come crumbling into hands like bread. Christ. Pomegranates, you would imagine. Really? Who would imagine the heart of a girl breaking in two right there on the living room floor? Cartoons turned up to blasting. Everything is so loud from the moment we come slicked into the hands of a stranger. Mother lying there in the pose of a dead and roasted chicken. I almost said that it would be white. The room, I mean. Thinking back, it was probably magnolia. Or blue, but a sickly kind. The colour of medical gloves. Latex. Astonishment when the rubber snaps.

I don't think it was pain that made him so great, I think painting brought him whatever happiness he had. * RIP David Lynch
People might bring up Vincent van Gogh as an example of a painter who did great work in spite of, or because of, his suffering. I like to think that van Gogh would have been even more prolific and even greater if he wasn't so restricted by the things tormenting him. I don't think it was pain that made him so great, I think painting brought him whatever happiness he had.

“I believe life is a continuum, and that no one really dies, they just drop their physical body and we'll all meet again, like the song says. It's sad but it's not devastating if you think like that... It's a continuum, and we're all going to be fine at the end of the story.” — David Lynch

My favorite Max Ritvo
AFTERNOON
When I was about to die my body lit up
like when I leave my house without my wallet.
What am I missing? I ask, patting my chest pocket.
And I am missing everything living that won't come with me into this sunny afternoon
my body lights up for life
like all the wishes being granted in a fountain at the same instant—
all the coins burning the fountain dry—
and I give my breath to a small, bird-shaped pipe.
In the distance, behind several voices haggling, I hear a sound like heads clicking together. Like a game of pool played with people by machines.

Always very lucky to publish a few things in a year. I think I was most proud of this one, which appeared in the last issue of much-missed bath magg. 🍎
Eva Griffin

How to set a table

Arrange the knives to say:
good morning, my dry-lipped lover!

Gloves on, hold intentions
like limp hands above an overflowing

bowl of apples. Hips must be draped
in gingham, the apron suggesting

comfortable domesticity. Place
little white teacups on their little white saucers.

Delicate! You know how easy it is
to crack—call it a woman’s intuition.

Of course the plates must be empty.
The attempt rightfully in the bin.

The man will laugh and call you an idiot
because you tried to make breakfast—

imagine, an anorexic with a talent
for abundance! Remember your mother

never taught you how to cook
though she did try. You were too busy

dipping a wet fingertip into the flour
making a secret of your tongue.

I’m reading Mary Lavin’s short stories at the moment and boy are they good! I’m ashamed to say I haven’t read them for years but I’m making up for it now. If you like Claire Keegan’s work, you’ll love them! Clever and beautiful and honest and real and each so original. Astounding.
