fascinating!!! i have been most recently skipped by the bus driver in montreal (today) and oakland CA (where i live) but i feel like this did not really happen to me in san francisco, chicago, boston when i lived in those places. for some reason flagging the driver feels rude to me but i gotta learn

Omg what?!?!? how do you ascertain whether you are in one type of place or the other, it is news to me that this is different in different places

is there some kind of universal bus driver language that i didn't learn in school bc i am so tired of buses driving right past me when i'm clearly waiting at a stop and this happens to me literally everywhere (hello from canada where the airport bus drove right past me and my bags at the first stop)

even more so in youth organizing where folks are in the rigid phase of their political development. lately i'm feeling like people i consider "on my side" don't consider me and people like me on their side, which is a weird grief to have after being in and out of movement organizing for 10 years

and not always, but often, it is people with lots of privilege that can afford to withdraw into the comfort of their like-minded bubble instead of working across disagreement to politicize / radicalize / actually get something done

as a child of the social media left it is really obvious to me how we exported what should have been Social Media rules (pressure, block, deplatform public figures with whom you cannot have good faith conversation) into our personal lives (going no contact with your family who voted Trump)

remember 15 years ago when if you talked about climate adaptation you would get cancelled because you were assuming climate change was inevitable and that was giving in to big oil's narrative? anyway just thinking about that for no reason

it pisses me off when niche inter-community conflicts and conversations become viral and multiply marginalized people are exposed to public ridicule from a hostile public and in a deepening fascist social climate

gosh her original essay was so transformative for how i think about my own class privilege, and this followup feels like it mirrors the longer arc of how we're understanding race and class on the left. "in a nation of racism and riches, there is no absolution here."

I really want people to think more like organizers. I'm seeing endless debate, and more than a little conspiracy theorizing, about the motivations behind the big companies' warnings about the danger of AI. And almost no discussion about how we seize this moment to demand the policies we want.

the website is upfront that carbonation is usually fossil fuel refining offtake anyway - so replacing your la croix with this prolly has 0 impact even if we assume perfect net-zero DAC production, but hey it could be marginally decreasing the profits that fossil fuel companies make from byproducts

emily thai @ethai.bsky.social · 29/07/2026
not an expert but yeah I think of this kind of thing not as a carbon offset, but as a tool to build awareness + support R&D + long-shot, proving demand in a possible utilization market if I'm gonna buy fun little drinks anyway, I'll spend a bit more to signal to The Market that I like CDR

A very uncomfortable thing to acknowledge is that policymakers need to either force or entice data centers to connect to the grid, and also that data centers can really fuck up the grid. There are not easy answers here, but there are answers, and I'm proud to be at an org that is working on them.

This mode of white male identity politics often gets conflated with class politics. It happens because signifiers of working-class identity are inherently ambiguous, and underspecified populist discursive categories like "the people" and the "establishment" strategically enable this conflation.
