It’s no longer news that eating meat — especially beef — is bad for the planet. But do you know why beef comes with such a steep climate emissions cost? buff.ly/76G7kZp

This article by @bjornjohann.bsky.social is excellent. It clearly explains carbon opportunity costs, uses GWP-20 for the methane emissions from livestock, mentions zoonotic pandemic risks, then focuses on solutions and advocates for a shift to plant-forward diets. bsky.app/profile/sent...

Damn, this interactive map from @sentientmedia.org is one of the coolest pieces of investigative ag reporting I've seen. These are all the animal farms that have received a notice of violation. Larger dots mean more animals are on the farm.

Poland isn't often associated with vegan food, but I had some of the best plant-based dishes of my life in Warsaw! Wraps, salads, stews, and some of the most mouth-watering pastries ever. 🍰🍧 Every time I visit a new place, I find new and delicious ways to eat more plants. 🌱

When you ask people how many animals are factory farmed, 96% of them underestimate the real answer. In reality, nearly all the meat you find in supermarkets come from factory farmed animals.

Human beings are scope-insensitive: as the scale of a problem increases, our concern doesn't grow correspondingly. This makes it hard for us to react correctly to massive issues like genocides, climate change, or factory farming.
123
Björn Jóhann @bjornjohann.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
Something strange about humans is that we are more likely to act if we feel we can solve more of the problem. In activism, this sometimes means making a problem FEEL smaller in order to keep larger groups of people working on it.

Today, I published new survey data that shows big the factory-farming knowledge gap is: a full 96% of people either don't know or underestimate the number of animals that are factory-farmed in the UK. Ninety-six percent.

Most people don't know all that much about common practices and the consequences of animal factories. Here's just a short collection of polls showing what percentage of respondents knew about these issues. Without a solid knowledge base, we're never going to make real change.

Lots of misleading and incorrect facts get spread into the mainstream, especially around climate and animal welfare. We could fact-check and bemoan the inaccuracy or we could sit back, take notes, and figure out how to get accurate facts into the zeitgeist. Link in comments

Pigs solve mirror-test variants. They learn computer-joystick games. They recognize their own names. By the cognitive benchmarks that earn dogs their "companion" status, pigs land somewhere around a 3-year-old human. We also slaughter roughly 1.5 billion of them a year.

100 grams of beef protein emits about 50 kg of greenhouse gases. 100 grams of pea protein emits about 0.4 kg. That's a 125x ratio. There is no other consumer choice — not your car, flights, nor thermostat — where two adjacent options differ by that kind of magnitude.

Animal agriculture produces more greenhouse gas emissions than every car, truck, plane, train, and ship on Earth combined. Most of the largest environmental NGOs don't have a single full-time staffer working on it.

Meat-lovers are willing to pay far less for alternative proteins than flexitarians or vegans/vegetarians are. While it's not surprising, it shows that to reach large segments of the population, price will likely be one of the biggest hurdles.
