They don't want what makes comic books great -- which is a throughline, start to finish, and archetypes that wear their hearts on their sleeve. Ignoring graphic novels and more nuanced takes on characters the ideal for a comic book character is a trope. Warcraft used to be this. It no longer is.

Instead Zul'jarra is branded "the true strength of the Amani", and I'm left scratching my head what exactly it's supposed to mean. "The true strength of the Amani" is what, exactly? Putting your faith in the Loa? Bouncing back from being poisoned? Being older than your brother? Running faster?

Is this even a real sacrifice when even Blizzard acknowledges the vast majority of the well-liked quests are the side ones with no voice acting or cinematics? The budget is clearly not resulting in higher quality. VA is one thing but modern cinematics largely feel like redundant wastes of time.

At a certain point constantly pointing out the team is bigger than ever but you also have no resources to do literally anything suggests your team has severe executive dysfunction or that bigger team count is padded out by an army of producers and directors that mostly spam Teams meetings.

Finished Forsaken Kingdom, no spoilers ahead. The strongest Warcraft experience in ages and feels authentic to WC3, right down to some very goofy Easter eggs and humor. Simple arcs done well and concisely, characters that make sense, elevating to a larger than life finale.

The only energy they take into work is the same that Afrasiabi had when he put Drek'thar into a wheelchair purely because he thought it'd piss Metzen off You can feel that level of childish spite overwhelming the game from BfA through now. They view the game as a tool to mock its fans.

It's increasingly baffling that every aspect of this IP is correctly telling you how awesome the WC3-vanilla WoW period of the Warcraft setting was and telling new stories in it while retail is like "we're running away from it as much as possible and we know it's sucked but give us another chance"

something to be said that undead players are so ecstatic about today because they get new content of their favorite race looking cool, somehow this is not a design focus for every single playable race as seen with blood elves in midnight

Anyway, I'll definitely resub to try Forever and see if it sticks. Classic has always been a one-and-done experience for me before, but this looks like it's giving an experience that retail isn't focusing anymore.

With that recent interview, we now know this is true: they do not have any idea what is making it to final release because everything is segmented into isolated spreadsheets that Ion can glance at and check Story Quests off a list. You should expect anything they say about TLT may not be true.

I know they missed and hit the wrong elf and all but it's still not too late for the complete extinction of the Windrunner bloodline, the story can still be saved!

one of the only good writers WoW has reposting a rant about hating unnatural therapy speech in dialogue makes me feel bad knowing the people they have to work with, especially knowing those people are probably itching to kill off Astalor the second they think they can as retribution

WoW protagonists, who are now always intended to be correct and the arbiters of all morality, more and more coming off like sociopaths is a perverse turn for the company. I continue wondering if they've externalized all fault for the 2021 lawsuit to the players and think we need lecturing forever.

3 years ago I wanted a world revamp, now I don't think anything would make me permanently quit retail WoW more than it. Yes, ruin Durotar for me. Make every orc say riveting lines like "go with honor and mercy" and "strength, peace, and honor". Make the Tiragarde humans the real heroes of the zone.

Arator's story is insane for many reasons, the primary being people are employed as a creative writers to make it. Human beings wrote that professionally. They are paid a salary to do so. I'm kind of in awe.

Neutrality has always just been a very easy way for blizz to write alliance characters into prominent roles that would otherwise require blizz to use a horde one. Elven unity for example has functionally made Void elves, Umbric the lead force instead of any horde group that could be made for use

> be a young person of political import in a nation that is on the verge of extinction
> one of your own effectively caused your near extinction, previous leader fucked up, great points of shame
> lost power is restored to your people
> new leader promises everything will be fine if you have patience and trust
> well it fucked up before when we needed it why should I trust it this time?
> research strange and forbidden magic
> as expected by everyone who told you not to do this, the magic backfires and causes you to mutate into a horrible monster
> strong armed into attacking your own homeland now

Multi-racial protagonist with famous parents with unique power over multiple cosmic forces that is best friends with everyone on both sides and every notable character are part of his extended family of mentors that are all dedicated to his success as the chosen one. He is back.
Med'an, the laughable self insert-tier character of the early 2010s that was an embarrassment swept under the rug by writers that knew he could never be put in-game.Arator, the same thing as Med'an but now free to cannibalize the in-game story, largely because he is a Windrunner (Azeroth was promised to their family 3,000 years ago).

Please also notice that the same expansion that suddenly reveals all the Amani actually hate Zul'jin is the same one that has the elves unify in the name of Anasterian, a leader previously portrayed as a moron whose isolationism and nationalism lead to the massacre of his people.

So how'd it go? Zul'jan redeems himself by renouncing all his beliefs and proclaiming the superiority of his sister, who believes in nothing, before dying. The deaths of her father figure and brother have no impact on her because she is a plot device to pacify the Amani and not a character.

Tapping the sign on the prescience of these posts (except for Metzen changing anything) from Sean Copeland's wife from 3 years ago and as a heads up to those that did not follow PTR that the upcoming Arator quests are reaffirming that he is the Most Chosen, Most Special, Most Noble Main Character.

well there has to be a point where you're continually sparing and redeeming a group you've doubled down on being allegorical to white supremacists while going out of your way to humiliate and kill someone you explicitly state is a victim of colonialism that you start questioning the devs' morality

On the eve of the patch, it's worth remembering that the entire storyline of these characters, near beat for beat, was predicted by many people from this screenshot alone a year ago. One would help this proves deeply embarrassing to all writers involved with this plot, but probably not.

If I wrote an essay about Zul'Jan it would be called "The Mortal Sin of Faithlessness", about how the imposed morality of the narrative leads to any character that goes against it to be punished, and how WoW becoming a "morality play" hurts the story by removing any pathos.

think a large part of why modern draenei stuff works is because it consistently focuses on the culture and people as a whole vs. throwing it all on the pyre of main character focus that plagues the rest of the game. it's from a bygone era that treats you like a character vs. a weird voyeur

I like how if Quel'danas was the final raid of the expansion this story would make so much more sense, if Xal'atath was trying to unleash Kith'ix to break through to the Sunwell. But we're dealing with writers that can't even comprehend cause and effect or linear time so what can you do!

I think people should be more prepared for TLT Northrend to have substantially more in the way of SL characters, races, and aesthetics than anything related to the factions or any of Northrend's lower fantasy vibes sans the inevitable neutral vrykul allied race

I have to cycle back to this two posts in a row because it really is obvious anymore that the lore is now viewed as "content" like everything else. It's designed like segmented, disconnected blocks pushed out. Why would they care if the old stuff is constantly invalidated? They view it like gear now

We've always had to accept that WoW's lore is pretty fluid, but at this point, there is no actual lore. There is Current Patch Content and nothing more. Anything that came before is irrelevant, mere suggestion at most, even within the same expansion.

Not a lot more that can be said about Midnight itself but I've truly never seen a dichotomy like this in the fanbase where its defenders are so totally disinterested in Warcraft itself and just want it to end. They recognize the story is a liability for Blizzard, and so they want it to stop existing

The "WoW is home" thing just rings so hollow when it feels like it's being hastily looted and squeezed for all its worth before the imminent abandonment, not too dissimilar from the current vibes of America. Not just the story but the absurd amount of bugs and unsustainable patch cycle. Bad vibes!

I like that the entire justification for why we needed elven armies was because "they know how magic wells work" and then what actually happens is that they leave and come back later with stuff to fix the magic well, so there was never any need for their armies. Incredible stuff

The Dawnwell and elf unity being offscreen plots is a microcosm of how Midnight's plot as a whole featuring two protagonists (Arator and Umbric) that largely only make things worse than they initially were but everyone around them reacts like they are in a completely different plot where it's better

Kind of insane to see people still arguing that universal permanent world peace is a natural realistic outcome of society and so WoW adopting it is fine. A little of column "realism is often boring" and a little of column "have you read any news headlines from the last 35 years"

Generational story fumble on par with BFA and Teldrassil for its undermining of the setting and player investment, and Shadowlands for its writing quality and desperation to rely on your strength of suspension of disbelief to then push miles beyond that.

serial orc enthusiast @eternalseething.bsky.social · 07/04/2026
The writing team's MO since BfA has been to just shut themselves off from criticism, and not coincidentally, you see large-scale response to feedback on the story stop happening around then. The same basic mistakes, plot holes, and myopic writing repeat from the same people.

All I'm saying is that this questline just gave us "Aethas Sunstrider" and a certain lead quest designer who may have worked on this has given us typos like Queen Calia and Ranger-General Alleria pushed to live before. Maybe a coincidence, but man if it's not I swear SC is the IRL Jailer.

I just think it's bad when you can make a decent argument that the current Warcraft writers appear to be more politically & ideologically incoherent and less capable of writing progressive stories than the Cosby Suite-era writers of out-of-control rockstar sex pest dudebro dads?

On the eve of the story finale, remember when Maria Hamilton said that reuniting the elves would not be an easy process and we'd only see the beginning of it in Midnight, and then it ended up taking about 15 minutes? It wasn't even the only thing she said that was flat out wrong about the expac!

More and more convinced SC handled the abysmal elven unity stuff as it would line up with their workflow on TWW: they were the lead on Hallowfall and also did the max level questing story that took place there. They were the lead on Eversong and Silvermoon, so it would match up.
