Today someone was convinced the time in an api response was wrong. I told them it was in UTC and was correct. They googled the current time in UTC. The AI summary took up 2/3 of the page and of course showed a totally random wrong time. They were convinced the server time was wrong. Great.

"There has never been a more money-losing technology than the large language model, and yet it is aimed mainly at creating business problems rather than solving them." Every meeting of our "AI group" is people unable to answer what problem we're trying to solve but 100% it needs to include genAI.

The idea of a "tech industry" has always relied on "computer" being a special kind of medium, akin to alchemy. And if tech demands to be king, AI hype has now elevated LLMs to a king of kings. But the solipsism has hit a dead end. The only way forward is to recognize that computers are not special.

LLMs are just normal technology. But tech is just a normal medium.
The more we focus on a particular technology, the more we lose sight of what normal people actually care about.

#KIDSAct

This is set up for laughs, but it’s actually one of the best demonstrations I’ve seen of how being capable of producing convincing sounding language and understanding meaning are two completely different things. A chatbot does not understand you, it just has automated responses based on your words.

I've increasingly seen the terms "Biological [male/female]" used to talk about trans people, even by people trying to be supportive, and I wanted to get my thoughts down about that. The tl;dr is that the terms are slurs and factually wrong, and pushing back when you see them is appreciated.

This is fucking terrifying
Separate research supports the concern. Anat Perry, a Helen Putnam Fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute and associate professor of psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, co-authored a paper in Science examining how sycophantic AI responses erode users’ ability to calibrate their own judgment. The paper found that when AI systems consistently affirm a user’s position, the user’s capacity for independent evaluation degrades over time.

Joanna Stern, NBC’s chief technology analyst and author of “I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,” has documented the creep of AI dependency in daily life. Her reporting has shown how users begin with low-stakes queries, such as what to cook for dinner or what to wear, and gradually escalate to consequential decisions about careers, finances, and relationships. The trajectory from convenience to reliance is difficult to reverse once established.

EU-minimumleeftijd sociale media komt eraan.

So somebody used different genAI models yesterday to get all the data from my hobby community bookshelf project - so they could add genre data and then filter on two specific genres. I get not wanting to go through 500+ books manually but they could’ve just sent me a message?

So in the light of recent news. Is there any search engine that’s actually a search engine still - preferably without any kind of AI summary among the results? I already use DuckDuckGo with AI summary turned off but if there’s any where it doesn’t even exit I’d prefer that

Library fines have gotten weird since the change in management
In this digital painting, a girl is walking down the spiral staircase of a library, carrying a box of treasures in her arms. She has a brown canvas backpack full of books on her back. In the center of the tower-shaped library, a two-headed dragon rests atop a massive pile of books. One of the heads is sleeping, while the other has just awoken and peeks with one cyan eye at the girl descending the stairs. A very anxious librarian is a short distance up the stairs, gripping the rail and his cane, and an equally anxious library assistant sits on the stair above him. Blue stained glass windows cast a bright light through the image, and a normal window somewhere offscreen lets in a vibrant warmth that hits the girl and the dragon. The girl appears uncertain too, and has an overdue notice in her backpack -- she is delivering overdue fines to the dragon, in the form of personal treasures!
