As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

Only 58% like someone from Michigan Hard to tell how much I've lost my accent vs. just got more educated and learned how words are supposed to be pronounced. As a kid in Michigan I definitely said "asteri[ks]", "mischievious", "eksetera" before I learned the spellings
Map of USA from mydialect — Standard. Red "most like you" is concentrated in Michigan and Wisconsin and extends to the West Coast. Blue "least like you" has concentrations in Maine through Connecticut as well as Louisiana and Mississippi. Bands of yellow (half way between "least like you" and "most like you") are present from Ohio to New Mexico and North Dakota through Colorado

Holy shit. www.wired.com/story/a-civi...
This past May, a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air medevac plane took off from Roswell, New Mexico, and headed west to the town of Ruidoso to pick up a patient. It shouldn’t have been a challenging flight for the two pilots and two nurses aboard. The temperature was 69 degrees; the sky was clear. The 60-mile journey normally takes a half hour, at most.

But once airborne, the plane ran into trouble. At the White Sands Missile Range that night, US military personnel were conducting a GPS jamming exercise that left the King Air pilots—and anyone else within hundreds of miles—unable to use modern navigation systems. Forced to revert to older technology, ones that they rarely if ever use, the medevac pilots got disoriented and crashed into the side of a mountain. There were no survivors.

NEW: I wrote for MSNBC about how Madison Square Garden turning off their facial recognition cameras for Taylor Swift is a perfect encapsulation of our dystopian present: where the wealthy can use surveillance to consolidate power, and the rest of us live in a privately owned panopticon.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got to buy MSG's privacy. Her fans aren't so lucky.
Reports that Madison Square Garden temporarily shut off its facial recognition system for Swift’s wedding expose a glaring problem with how the elite wield and control mass surveillance.

A thing we’re not talking about enough with AI/teaching is how many gains in creating accessible, universal design pedagogy are basically being lost to AI-enabled mass cheating. The only solution seems to be to go back to old and inaccessible methods (paper exams, etc) that punish disabled students.

well that's certainly one way to answer a question about how much you relied on AI to write your book about how AI impacts the truth... www.wired.com/story/future...
Screenshot of text that reads: I called Rosenbaum and asked for a more detailed description of how he’d used AI to write the book, and whether he disputed Pangram’s results. (BenBella Books, whose imprint published The Future of Truth, did not return requests for comment. Simon & Schuster, which distributes BenBella’s books in the United States, declined to comment.)

Rosenbaum would not weigh in on the accuracy of Pangram’s results. In fact, he didn’t want to talk about them at all. “I don’t participate in that conversation,” he said. “It’s like saying, do you beat your wife? It’s one of those accusations that there’s no response to.”

The thing that amazes me about people like this is that the task they are trying to do is almost always trivial to do *without* genAI... but they've never bothered to try. You can export your slide deck speaker notes as a handout. Maybe 10 seconds. No unauthorized editing.

We're seeing a drop off in newborn donations in Minneapolis. Birth workers are seeing small/early babies due to stress/food insecurity—ICE has not stopped—families still in desperate need of support. If you're able, here is a wishlist compiled by folks doing mutual aid www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/...
Operation Metro Love Thy Neighbor
Hello Friends of Operation Metro Love Thy Neighbor! Many of our neighbors in Minneapolis are being targeted based on the color of their skin, their accent, or their country of origin. From a healthcare standpoint, this is leading to very scary outcomes, as patients are terrified to leave home and are foregoing necessary care in an effort to stay safe. For moms and babies, medical professionals scramble to meet these needs and to ensure patient safety. As neighbors and community members, we want to ensure these moms and babies have their needs met in terms of supplies, personal care items, and infant and toddler items. While it's a far cry from a baby shower, we are doing our best to ensure that our neighboring mamas have what they need in times of massive distress. All items purchased on this list will be delivered to me and then immediately sent out into the community for maximum impact. On behalf of all the mama and baby teams, we so appreciate your love and generosity.Black image with white text and white line drawing of a parent holding a baby. Text reads: "Mama + Baby donations needed. All items with an asterisk must be unused. Other items may be gently used. These items will go to immediate homes and be appreciated. [heart emoji] Thank you! ITEMS NEEDED: diapers (size 0-6)*, baby wipes*, pacifiers*, teething items*, free and clear detergent, baby shampoo, baby-safe lotion, infant clothing (all sizes), infant hats, baby blankets, burp cloths, swaddlers, hands-free baby carriers, breastfeeding guards*, feeding pillows, maternity pillows, belly bands, nipple cream*, pimps, infant safe toys, pack + play, epsom salt."

To summarize, home molecular virology can tell you about: - viral load ("when should I go back to work?" "should grandma come visit?") - which particular virus someone has ("did my kid get me sick or do I have something new?") Very interesting stuff, however impractical!
